Garner won in 1987 - props to them for that...but every year isn't 1987...they've had a good run for the last 2 years and again good for them...1 team gets it done each year, unfortunately this one isn't it for Wake...it doesn't do anyone any good to start comparing teams to the one that won it all unless it's after the fact that they won it also...and there was a lot of that going on...not fair to the champs and not fair to the team aspiring to be the champ...

Garner has earned that respect and until another triangle team can do that then they can join along with the Trojan nation.if anybody can't accept that then so be it,and I know some of my favorite teams don't have a state champ banner.

Like the old saying goes, the only thing worse than bad publicity is NO publicity... Garner likely gets so much love (and hate) because they have long been recognized as the best football program in Wake County, if not the Triangle area. Doesn't mean other teams aren't worthy of recognition, but until somebody can knock them off the top, we'll probably keep talking about them more than anybody else.

Like you said, cap, it is hard to understand tone through a message board. That is probably why your comment got jumped on so hard. Since there are way too many posts on this board that attack area teams (Wake County), and since Garner just lost, it looked like this was just another one of those. So when you ask "Why does this team get so much love" everyone assumes that you believe that Garner is not worthy of said love. Instead, you were just asking for information.

And I'm not sure why Nick felt the need to question the validity of this particular topic, especially considering the trash that regularly gets posted here. A little defensive, maybe? This topic was certainly worthy of posting, but most of the subsequent posts (probably including my own) were not.

I think it's the fact that it's been since 87' that a GT or any school from the county has won the big dance that may earn the question as to why it keeps coming up....it's what people respect around the county even though it's taken that long...

    Thanks, Schiess!

Good luck to your team as well.

Bishop,in your defense that 87 season earned the right to be mentioned anytime ,it doesn't bother me especially when these other ridiculous Komo rants are lighting up this blog, nice season Trojans.

    @capital

As a Garner fan & alum, I like the fact that the '87 team gets honored the way they do. You inquired about it by creating a thread. My question is this...if the coverage of that team bothers you, why not just ignore it? Or, you can always send Nick an email in private, right?

When it comes to "tone", there isn't one person on here who can say with absolute certainty that others are mad, happy, etc, just from reading comments. Others would like you to think they have all the answers but they don't & that's a fact.

i thinkits great why not put itup every year, thats just like asking why do coaches wear shiprings they won in the past, because they earned it, keepthe article and the video on every season it's classic material, Garner Dogs(love the speech)

That's just the "tude" you get when you question certain schools on here. I caught that real quick and I have been on here a lot shorter time than you. To someone on the outside looking in, it is obvious, but some will argue differently.

    Nick, battling, waggle....

I know sometimes TONE can't really be captured on message boards...
so in all honesty...where should i pose a ? about a team that is covered within the HSOT coverage area? If my ? wasn't worth message board material, whats the point. I'm not a Garner hater, or any hater of any team, my only alliance is with knightdale because my oldest son attends the school...if my next son attends a different highschool my allegiance will shift.

not understanding why you guys seem fustrated or short with my comment...maybe i haven't been around long enough to know, but I was under the impression that anything dealing with NC highschool sports was appropiate to be discussed....

beck and Patriot thanks once again!

Not sure why this is worth a message board topic, but there you go. Take from it what you may. Nick

Not sure why half the stuff on here is message board topic sometimes.

^That pretty much sums it up, Patriot. True GT fans will always remember the run the '87 team had. It just doesn't get any better than that.

    GO TROJANS!

If you were around back then, you'd understand why '87 is still being talked about today. Story is the stuff of legends... David v Goliath, rural v urban, rich v poor, Hal Stewart v THE WORLD. It was as close as North Carolina might ever get again to "Hoosiers". Didn't hurt having an undersized running back who ran for over 3,000 yards while scoring 47 TD's, which at the time was a national record. So yeah, it was more than just your run of the mill state title win. And since it has now been over 25 years, it serves as a reminder to just how hard it is to win it all. OK, let me wake up and get back to 2012...

Did somebody mention 1987? Ever wonder why others create threads regarding GT's '87 title team, only to ask others why the topic keeps coming up?

If another team from Wake ever wins the Big One, they'll talk about them too.

it's all good Nick....really I was just curious, plus even though the article may not have been posted ALOT...the topic of Garners 1987 team comes up often....being relatively new to the area and HSOT I was just trying to get a little enlightened on the areas football history.....

Didn't mean to ruffle feathers....seems like you got a lil defensive....Oh and good job putting it together....

Actually Great Job you guys do with the site in general!

    Garner's in WHAT COUNTY???...

  • Nick Stevens Nov 26, 2012

The first time you saw it was last year the week of the state championship game. I know that because I spent about 12 hours getting it together. The only other time it has been in a prominent position on HSOT was last week because they were 1 game away from the title game again.

Not sure why this is worth a message board topic, but there you go. Take from it what you may.
