Agree the competitive competion can be found locally. I say cleveland and Gibbons outta conference would be a good series to start. It really doesnt matter to me though. We need to be ready to play anybody on any given friday.

Good point Teach. I was only considering the cost of gas for a bus that gets about 4 miles a gallon. When I read it last night I googled it and Warwick is 167 miles, Currituck 135 miles, and NEastern 117 miles and that's from a generic point in Wilson and not the school. I had heard we were having trouble filling our schedule next year, but would like to think with all the schools within 50 miles we could fill it more cost efficient than this one. Even though my gift level probably doesn't even qualify me for "cheap skate level", as a booster I'd be looking for answers. Makes no sense to put our kids on a bus for over 3 hours to Va. I remember in the 80s when Northeastern was a conference game it was a noon dismissal, not sure it does our kids good to miss the class time this schedule would necessitate.
@Mojo are you SURE what you have seen is the schedule or just a list of potential opponents? Would miss the SWE rivalry and from some parts of the district CBAycock is just as close as Beddingfield and a long time opponent.

@jsh. I am with you on that one. If that schedule is right, it makes no sense, especially with the travel expense that the county charges the school to use the activity buses. This year it is $3.75 per mile. I can think of at least a dozen teams that would "toughen" the schedule that are less than an hour away from Wilson. Even if the games next season are at Hunt, the next year would most likely be away. From that list the only ones that make sense are South Central (not an upgrade), Hertford, and naturally the county rivalry game with Beddingfield. They should have kept SWE and tried scheduling someone like Tarboro (even though they will be 1-A next year).

If your info is right, which I'm gonna have to see it to believe it, they have. Not sure how a tougher non-con schedule would have helped us against NG, we have no problem handling everybody else and the Big East will be back to its normal tough conference status next season. Still prefer scheduling local, I like being able to travel less than a half hour to all road games. We could schedule Alabama, Notre Dame, and Georgia early in the year and still not beat NG the last 2 years.

Only way hunt is going to win state is to get past northern guilford which has only lost like six games since the school opened

OK. You know thats where Michael Vick and Norm Sneed played high school football? Why are we playing them? Seems strange a high school 170 miles away with an enrollment of over 1600 is coming to Wilson to play a 3A school.

No doubt Stevie has been loyal to the program. Other than the 1st 2 years the school was open I think he's been there the whole time either as a student or faculty or staff. He's a good fellow too, comes from good raising. I think in my pout about the NG loss I probably criticised his play calling but unless its working I'm not gonna be satisfied either way. Nobody other than Raper knows the program better, no doubt about that. I'm sure we'll be ok whatever happens and still hold out hope Raper stays.

Hertford, Warwick Virginia, Elizabeth city, currituck, beddingfield, south central and then the big east conference play. They are playing 11 games next year and yes they are playing a team from Virginia

I am going to step in and defend Stevie Hinnant for a moment here. He has had head coaching experience at the JV level and I have coached on his staff before. Stevie is more than capable of stepping in and taking the top spot should Randy Raper decide to retire. I think he should be the next man for the job. He has been loyal to the program, helped build it to what it is today, and has patiently waited his time. He may not want the job but I believe he would take it in a heartbeat. I believe it would be his dream job if you will. People always want to criticize his coaching and play calling but I'll take his resume over some of the others sugessted. Sure Hunt looses a lot of seniors but they always find a way to rebuild and get the most out of what they got. That is the Hunt Way and Stevie would continue that tradition.

Pridgen coached Fike to the state championship game in 2002 and coached the East/West game in 2005. Not sure I'd call him a joke. My choice would be Nelson. Again, not sure he'd take it now. I hope Raper stays. I'll take 200+ wins and 5 appearances in the eastern finals.

  • MojoMadness Nov 28, 2012

I would love to see Nelson return. But I think he is gonna see his work through at Fike. Theres alot of options out there this time of year. Hate to see Raper go but maybe a change is what we need. I know that we need a solid youth program to compete on the level some of these other schools are on. From pop warner up to high school Wilson needs to get the youth program strong if they want to hang state banners in this county again.

No way Hinnant takes the coaching job. Keep him as AD. However, he should fire himself as Offensive Coordinator. Maybe like Debbie Yaw at NCSU, make an announcement he was out-coached against Northern Guilford and took the worst beating in HUNT Football History and re-sign. Hunt should go after Nelson and keep it in the Hunt family....Pridgen!? what a joke....

  • jsh27896 Nov 27, 2012

I aint buying either of these rumors. You gonna tell me Stevie even wants the job and he'll get it even though he has no football head coaching experience? I guess he's gonna step down as A.D. so he can take it? No. Far as the schedule goes, lots of schools between here and the beach. I'd consider the source. I'm gonna GUESS instead of calling mine fact, and say IF Raper retires Richie Pridgen gets the job. I might even wonder if he's not there now for that reason. Thats assuming Tom Nelson at Fike really is mad the whole thing didnt go down a couple years ago like he supposedly was told it would, or that he's happy about the progress he's made at Fike and wants to see it thru. Otherwise, the job is his. Far as schedule, not sure at this point its been decided. Rumor I had heard was Cleveland, but a Cleveland fan told me that wasnt the case. Rumors are like opinions and.....

Not sure about Hunt's non-conference schedule next year but I believe most schools are returning to the 11-game schedule with the NCHSAA re-adding the extra week in the season. Hunt did have a 2-year deal with 4-A Holly Springs and routinely played Rocky Mount when the Gryphons were still 4-A (and usually beat the Warriors).

Hunt will not play Fike as a non-conference opponent any more so that's one game that will open up. Hunt kept former Eastern Carolina Conference foes Eastern Wayne and CB Aycock on its schedule but I don't think they'll be able to play the Warriors now that they're going into that split 3-A/4-A league and I'm not sure if the SW Edgecombe deal will continue. So Hunt could have a lot of new non-conference opponents next season. I know Fike is retooling its schedule and won't face Bunn or Northside next fall.

I agree that Hunt has the pedigree to attract 4-A non-conference opponents. I'd like to see them get Greenville Rose back on the schedule. The Rampants and Warriors were together in the old 4-A Big East when it began in the late '70s until Hunt departed for the 3-A ranks.

Of course, there's also Havelock and Cleveland as well as soon-to-be 3-A Corinth Holders, which is just up the road and as a former Warrior in Brent Walston as its AD.

Also, be encouraged. Even though it will be tough to ever replace Josh Joyner, I'm sure someone will step in and prove to be very worthy. After all, Josh stepped in after Caleb Driver, who punished many defenses during his tenure at Hunt.

At Southern Nash we thought the sky was falling after Tracey Coppedge and Terron Huffman graduated last year. How do you replace 2 backs that each ran for over 1,000 yards for 3 consecutive years and combined for some 8,000 total rushing yards? Well, you don't really. You just hope to find someone that is worthy and Rashid Campbell was that guy. He ran for over 1,000 yards for us this season, and like everyone else, I was extremely satisfied that we posted an 8-3 mark. So the sky didn't fall after all.

Hunt will do just fine next year (unfortunately for us Southern Nash fans...lol)

I think Hunt still wins 8 games in the regular season next year. It could be 9 or 7, but I'm thinking at least 8. Our conference (3-A Big East) retains all 6 members (Hunt, Fike, N.Nash, S.Nash, N.Central & Rocky Mt.) and usually there are about 3 teams that struggle, we just don't know which 3 sometimes. Hunt has won the conference each of the past 4 years, posting a 19-1 conference mark during that time.

Let's say Hunt goes 4-1, or even 3-2. They may even go 5-0 again if the conference struggles. Couple that with who they may play in non-conference games. I don't know who Hunt is playing next year for those games, but in recent years they have played teams that traditionally have sub-.500 marks (Eastern Wayne, CB Aycock, Beddingfield, Fike). SW Edgecombe is pretty tough but who knows? I still say Hunt would only better themselves if they were to play stronger non-conference games. It's easy to beat up on weaker teams, but I think that just sets a team up for disappointment down the road when they play better quality competition, especially in the playoffs. There are quality opponents in relatively close proximity to Hunt...Cleveland, Triton, South Johnston, Tarboro, etc. I'd even step it up and go play at least two 4-A schools. With only 6 teams in our conference it allows us to play 5 non-conf. games each year.

Also, maybe look into playing teams that play differing styles than that which you are used to. Most Big East teams utilize run-heavy offenses and play against other teams that are like-minded. Playing a team that passes a lot like South Johnston or Cardinal Gibbons would challenge your defense and probably make them better in the long run when you run into a playoff team that throws a lot. I cringe when Southern Nash has to play a team that throws well. They usually pick us apart pretty easily...lol

Depending on who Hunt plays in non-conf. games, I still say they go 8-2. And you never know what may happen in the playoffs.

You have to have a solid jv program to have a quality varsity program.it sounds like hunt has that and that's why they are a quality program,it goes for all of them.this is a topic You don't hear about.

2010 we missed our chance. We were better than NG that year.

  • Saint_of Nov 24, 2012

Hunt hasn't won a JV conference title in several years, including this bunch of seniors. There seems to be a quantum leap from JV to varsity for the Warriors. I didn't think they'd match their 2010 season but they've outdone it twice. It's hard to be that good every year for a long stretch but I wouldn't count Hunt out. If they didn't have to play NG every year in the East final, they might have won a state title by now.

Im gonna say Raper steps aside. Hunt has a crucial decsion to make about a replacement. I hope a good choice is made. Im wondering if we have seen the last of the running back era at Hunt? We have some capable recievers returning. We may be mediocre at best next year. But a playoff spot is definatley in reach.

  • jsh27896 Nov 24, 2012
    All Star

We do have some talent returning however. The guys in our secondary, Dexter Wright, Malik Williams, Justin Jefferson, and Isaiha White I'm convinced could start for anybody in the state. Kentrell Brown and Darien Ballard return at reciever and are talented. Dont know what we're gonna do about an offensive line or a defensive front.

  • jsh27896 Nov 24, 2012
    All Star

Losing a bunch of seniors and a JV team that was average doesnt look too promising. Add in that Fike returns so many and their JV team won the conference, Rocky Mount was better than expected and return the majority of their talent, and Southern Nash, besides just being Southern Nash returns 9 on defense. Gonna be a task for Hunt next year. Gonna be a chore just to make the playoffs with Raper or anybody else.
My bet is Raper is gone. College has been paid for time to enjoy the rewards of a life of hard and steady work while he's still young enough to enjoy it. Depends on how bad he wants to add a state title to his resume in my mind. Word is thats what brought him back the last 3 years, gonna be at least 2 before we get back to the level Hunt has played the last 3 years.

  • Saint_of Nov 24, 2012

no doubt they'll still have some good players (hunt always does) but the real question this offseason is whether their head coach will come back

  • MojoMadness Nov 24, 2012

After a great season in 2012 how do you think Hunt will do next season. We lose 27 seniors 2 of those are QB's 1 great running back and a DE that is going to LSU. Im sure Hunt coaching will have a good squad ready for action.
