I would call the Big East anything but weak. It is just like any other conference, it has its power and its bottom feeders. Next year I believe it will be as tough as ever with Rocky Mount improving, Southern and Hunt will always be tough. Not sure what Nash Central has coming back as they were a little down this year. Northern will probably be down again as they look for a new coach, and who knows how Fike will be. They were suppose to be a lot better than they were this year.

Making the playoffs in high school football in the 2000's is an easy task...The only programs that do not make it are the ones with turnover at coaching level and no support from the ten cent millionaires in the community...(Wilson is loaded with those).

How u going to call it a weak conference when just last year anybody could have had a shot at the conference championship also I believe southern, fike, and Nash central went into the playoffs

Sometimes I think you guys/gals beat yourselves silly criticizing and over-analyzing
a playoff game outcome. Hunt went 3 games deep into the playoffs and had a very successful year. Did they beat NG? - no, but 99-98% of the other teams in the state could not either. NG is way OP for their classification like few other programs are like Tarboro, Carrboro, Havelock. If you can beat 98-99% of the other teams - you should be satisfied. A state championship in football is a very rare accomplishment that Hunt may never see again for years - is that something to fire coaches over? I think not.

    @thomasman
If you believe Hunt only makes the playoffs because of a weak schedule then how are you surprised by playoff losses? My point is you don't make a point. Which one is it? As far as scheduling, takes both sides to agree to play. 5 of the teams we played made the playoffs. I guess your saying Southern Nash was sorry this year, we beat them twice. Also wins over Gibbons and Cleveland but I guess you think they're sorry too? How bout Nash Central last year? And Gibbons? You just don't make sense. Since we never heard from you most of the year I'm thinking you're a poser and a hater. How do you expect us to win state championships at the same time you think we only make the playoffs due to a weak schedule? Puzzling.

MOJO will always be a part of Hunt football even after Raper goes.

Having Fike twice, CB Aycock, Eastern Wayne in the regular season are four easy wins. Agreed? Not exactly a difficult schedule. If Raper wants to really prove himself-then let's see what he can do next season after losing a large senior class and actually schedule a Tarboro, Havelock, Greenville Rose..etc. The current Big East is a Sub-par conference at best....As far as Hunt History- dig into some of the losses over the years. Raper first year- 1st Rd loss, second year- 2 tds from perfect season-no playoffs. Third season-Hunt drops to 3A-gets thumped by Tarboro in 3rd Rd. Late 90's-Beddingfield thumps Hunt in Playoffs....Go through early 2000's and year after year..Upsets from predictable coaching...Watch Raper resign b/c he knows the show is over for the Warriors....Dim the lights on this 'MOJO" BS....

Not sure how anything is "telecasted" on the radio but that's the most intelligent part of that post. Other than 2010 when Hunt should have beaten NG when was Hunt the best team in the state? And how can you feel he can't win the big one and at the same time feel Hunt wouldn't have a winning record or make the playoffs except that have an easy schedule? 5 years in the regional final out of 22 at the head job better than about 99% of the high school coaches in the state. I think you need to study "Hunt History 101" or at least choose one side or the other. Lots of former players gonna disagree with you, but most don't count the waterboy anyway. Tell everybody that was "telecasted" on the internet.

  • thomasman7954 Nov 27, 2012
    Towel Boy

Hunt History 101...As a former player for Raper early in his career. Raper should "pass the torch" on....He always motivates his players well, can capture a winning record (easy scheduling) and get into the playoffs BUT RAPER CANNOT WIN THE BIG ONE! Period! Numerous and I mean numerous times over the years Hunt has choked in the big games. Hunt was easy prey for NG. The Greensboro radio telecasted that "it's almost like the NG defense knows what plays are being called before the snap!"...Time to "Mojo" to the rocking chair... I would be shocked and disappointed if Hinnnant get the Head Coaching job.

Unfortunately you cannot count on that. I saw their JV squad and they are not that good. That talent levels out considerably when you count all the freshman and sophomores playing varsity this year. I taught a lot of those kids and coached them in other sports, I just don't see them as a serious contender. Playoffs maybe but not conference champions in varsity.

@MojoMadness. Fike? Seriously?? They are losing half a team that only one 3 games and had to forfeit one of them. Fike will not get better until they get of their LAZY duffs and hit the weight room. Very few of them take it seriously and it hurts everyone. I know the kids and know what goes on during weight class.

Nelson was suppose to the coach in waiting at Hunt, but when Raper didn't retire 2 years ago he took the Fike job. If the county would quit allowing students and players special permission to attend schools things would be much different. There are kids at all three high schools that do not live in the district but were granted special permission by the Cntral Office for one reason or another.

Also, I don't think none of the schools will see their full potential until there is an ORGANIZED youth football program put in place county wide. I teach kids from Wilson that play for the junior team that feeds NOrth Johnston. There are 6-7 junior teams in wilson but no organization to it at all.

Hunt NEEDS to challenge themselves in the off season. These cake games are not beneficial. I want Hunt Vs Cleveland, Hunt Vs CG, Hunt vs Tarboro IN THE OFFSEASON.

  • Saint_of Nov 25, 2012

I'd pay $50 to see Hunt play Tarboro.

The special teams coverage has to do with the kick itself. I know there was a freshman kicker and it's not his fault but unless you can send the ball inside the 10 on kickoffs, you're going to struggle with coverage. And pooch and squib kicks are 50/50 propositions from my perspective.

The end result of watching NG, Havelock and Butler dominate is that maybe HS coaches should be dividing their time between the weight room and the track. Speedy, mobile defenders are what works at all 3 levels of football and offenses need to be able to pass and run with equal efficiency.

  • clevelandfb65 Nov 24, 2012

Saint of_ Thats exactly how we Cleveland fans say about Havelock. Like one guy said earlier "I would pay $50 to see NG play Havelock" and it would probably be the biggest HS game in State history. Too bad it will never happen.

Have to say I was shocked by the 44-0 score jsh. And you're right about special teams on Hunt. Both CG and Cleveland scored in under a minute after long kickoff returns. Sounds like NG did as well. Anyway what's done is done. Hope Hunt rebuilds next year and look forward to seeing you guys again late in the season!

I agree Logan is the best in the state, however I think NG gets the short end will all the hype about him. Defense and coaching is what wins for them.
NG is just plain better than us. Not 44-0 better, but better. I thought our guys were intimidated last night and if they were it trickled down from the coaching staff being intimidated by NG.Same as last year.
Bout time for a new specials team coach. Same thing for 3 years, kick it deep and watch them run back across the 50. Dont know how that hasnt been addressed especially after Gibbons and Cleveland almost ran the opening kickoff back the previous 2 weeks. Just like NG did last night. Also dont understand why Hunt decides to get completely away from what has been successful all these years and wants to throw the ball so much. And the play calling?? I think we're better having a pretty dang good baseball coach going back to baseball and hiring an offensive coordinator that knows a little bit about offense. This was the 3rd game in a row our offense was just plain hard to watch. Gibbons and Cleveland gave us the turnovers to allow us to win in the end. Both those games had Hunt played Hunts game would have scored over 40 with all the TOs, but lets just throw the ball and when we run lets bunch everybody together so the defense can put 11 men near the line and in the box. Heaven forbid we try to find a tight end down the field out of that formation.
Hunt was LUCKY to be in Greensboro last night. Gibbons and Cleveland both out played and out coached Hunt. 44-0?
Sorry if this offends anybody. Fact is if you drove to Greensboro last night and came home and everything is ok today and you're just happy to have been given the opportunity, then you NEED TO BE offended by somebody. Might as well be me.

Josh Joyner isn't a bad player and the Hunt defense isn't a bad defense but NG's blinding speed can't be prepared for. Catholic will be lucky to stay within 4 TDs.

NG won't have a problem with Catholic, just like the Nighthawks haven't had a problem with anyone this year. They play at an entirely different level and Catholic is going to stand and watch them run past just like everyone else.

TJ Logan is the best HS football player in the state and NG might be the best team and that includes Butler, New Bern and Havelock. They take the game to a different place altogether.

Northern Guilford is scary, dominating in every facet of the game tonight. I just got in and checked the Greensboro News & Record to see some of the numbers. It reports that Hunt had just 3 first downs the entire game. And until late in the 4th quarter they never really threatened all night. I believe they got to the 22 yard line late. Joyner was held to 17 carries for 104 yards, but the GN&R reports that 81 of those yards came on those 3 big gain carries. He tallied just 23 yds on the other 14 carries. That NG defense is suffocating.

When Northern went into halftime up 37-0 on that Coltrane TD pass to Logan I was just in shock. Going in, I felt Hunt was going to have a difficult time scoring on this defense, but I don't think anyone thought they would be shutout. I didn't think NG would put up 44 either. I'm not sure there's a 4-A team in the state that could beat them right now. 3 shutouts in 4 playoff games, outscoring opponents in those 4 games by a score of 205-14...!!!

Logan's numbers according to the GN&R were 27 carries for 211 yds & 3 TD's. He caught 3 passes for 68 yards and another TD, plus was 2 for 2 passing for 37 yds from the wildcat. I spoke with his dad briefly on the way out to congratulate him on his son's accomplishments during his high school years. UNC is getting a stud.

Hunt shouldn't feel too bad. I don't think anyone is going to beat this NG team. The Warriors posted back to back 13-1 seasons. Any team would love to have a 13-1 year. Sometimes it just isn't meant to be. It's tough at the moment because of expectations this year. Still, nothing to hang your heads about.

"It's a shame not to see a match up this year of Havelock and Northern Guilford."

You could probably charge 50 bucks a head and still fill a stadium to watch these two goliaths go at it. Two programs clearly head and shoulders above their competition would make an entertaining matchup to see who really is the king of 3A football.

I agree Mojo. A few years ago the Wilson League had pretty good Youth programs but I think it's down to only 6 now. N. Guilford is just too much on both sides of the ball. The youth program in Guilford County is so established and until we realize this in Wilson we can continue to expect results like this.
