the N&O got him at 38-62 with 643 yards passing. MC and Wakefield the two best offenses garner have played all year. Another great one coming up next in leesville.

how many pass attempts did he have...it had to be close to 70 if not more.

Just keep taking care of business, Garner. Never heard of a QB dropping 600 yards on a team & not getting the W.

    GO TROJANS!

The reason I said Barrios will run wild is I think he will have to to keep them in the game. MC put up 517 yards on Garner in their meeting but two fumbles and a punt return and garner scored 3 TDs in 3 minutes and that put Middle Creek away. The 5 turnovers tonight for Middle Creek killed them. I've never seen team go a whole game not punt, and still lose. At least Garner made MC punt at least 2 or 3 times. I think Leesville will have success moving the ball like Middle Creek did but I think Garner will win by 2 TDs or more. MC defense plays hard but they are an average defense and Defense wins championships. The MC defense has only one Senior so they will be better next year.

it was that much...geeze i knew he had over 300 at the half. So he threw for another 300 in the second half. We give up 620 yards passing and still win by 42. Crazy game to say the least.

For those at the game you got a taste of Garners team speed that I told you about before hand would be the difference. Their Dfense broke the game open with 2 pick six's at the end of the first half. Garner scored 3x in the last two minutes of the first half to bury WF by half time. That great O line everybody was defending before the game, carried Whitehead to 5 yds on 8 carries...with the sacks WF had -16 yds rushing. Mitch could never get time to throw down field. It's weird to think that a team put up 620 yds passing and was chasing all night. The 3 picks resulting in scores and the 14 point swing with #6's stunt really hurt.

Caught a deep pass...going in for the easy TD...slows way down at about the 10 and almost walks in. The Garner defender catches him and strips the ball from behind...knocking it out of bounds on the one. Garner gets the ball....goes back the other way 99 yds and scores using about 8-9 minutes of clock.

Wakefield receiver on way into the endzone slowed down, caught by garner #2 and had the ball smacked out of his hands and garner recovered on the 1.. Garner drove for a 99 yard TD.. WAkefield player did not finish the play.. slowed down and had it wacked out of his hands/

an earlier post on kicking, GARNER kicker does a good job, 10 for 11 on extra points, the only miss was not held. 2 punts over 40 yards, kickoffs on wet slippery ground were not bad.

Congrats to the Trojans! A very balanced team and aggressive on D. You demonstrated your dominance tonight. Seeing Leesville and Garner play we might just have a chance to bring a state championship back to the Triangle. Wakefield, I know that you didn't want to end it this way but you just ran into a better overall team in Garner. Great job and don't hang your head. 11-2 and lose to Leesville and Garner, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

  • travisiscool999 Nov 9, 2012

The defensive showing by Leesville should cause some concern, especially when they are about to play a team that just scored over 70 points.

Middle Creek loses 37 to 30 to Leesville. Middle Creek throws 4 interceptions and 1 fumble. Leesville has no turnovers! Middle Creek didn't punt the whole game!!! I am not joking NO PUNTS!! MC implodes again just like they do to Garner every year!! Sorry Teammugs my prediction Garner 62 Leesville 48. Berries is awesome and he run wild on Garner but not enough to win.

^From my viewpoint, when he slowed down nearing the goal line I actually thought he had dropped the ball on the catch. That was a big play, but once Garner got rolling this was a total mismatch.

Not looking good for WF. A lot of turnovers (2 for TDs), penalties, poor field position. Garner scores on 2 turnovers and TD reception all in the last 3 mins of the 2 quarter. If any team can score quick and get back in the game it will be WF. Starting second half.

First of all one team does not have more to lose than the other, you win, you go on, you lose, you go home. Wakefield was ranked higher than Garner at the first of the year. Both would lose the samething and that is the season would end.

mj, you are right on point that special teams especially PATs may play an important role depending upon how close the game is. PATs have plagued WF for most of the season. Both WF and WFR missed some key PATs last week. Luckily for WF missing PATs throughout the year has not contributed to a loss this season. However, special teams could be huge tonight and becomes even more important for any team advancing and the competition gets stiffer and the better teams become more consistent in all phases of the game.

Colleges do not necessarily recruit high players off of high school stats. Stats (are sometimes inflated) can certainly help but college recruiters are also evaluating players based upon athleticism, specific skill set (i.e. footwork, technique, for QB arm strength, quickness in delivery, accuracy, ability to read defenses and see the field), and overall potential at the college level. There are many GREAT high school players and if we are comparing high school players and stats then that is okay. However, if we are comparing QBs and overall ability and skill set, not many compares to Mitch. He has the entire package, win or lose tonight. When you have National Championship coaches like Steve Spurrier, Nick Sabin, and Les Miles offer you scholarships they must see something in you. IMO, he is the best QB I have seen in NC (recent years, not Roman Gabriel days) since Chris Leak. Chris Leak without a doubt is the best in recent years I have seen but he also had a powerhouse of a team and more athletic weapons like Hakeem Nicks (NY Giants) and Mohamed Massaquoi (Cleveland Browns). Imagine Mitch with that team, no offense to WF's current team but that Independence team is probably the best team in NC history. I remember watching them play in Charlotte and at Carter Finley Stadium for the state title. Amazing, I thought I was watching a small college team.

How has Garner's kicking game been this year...specifically their ability to make extra points? Wakefields is so so. WFR struggled last week against WF and that was a difference maker when it came down to the end of the game. Might be a factor tonight?

gsmusty - we saw Leatham @ Leesville that year 2010 and Leatham did not hurt so much as the running game that Leesville couldn't stop even after taking a 14-0 lead, Lopez in particular...Leatham was getting hit by Leesville's D quite a bit too, but they had an answer with the run...Garner stopped the run different teams play different games - the next week Garnerdidn't fare so well against WFR who only ran the ball...case in point Mitch and WF are better than that MC team...better than Garner?...I'll say they outscore them by a little...

Jhatcher, welcome to the forum. We appreciate your insight. When I said that WF has nothing to lose it was primarily based off of this season and only related to three issues from the past as to why WF may have felt the pressure to prove themselves during the regular season and first round of the playoffs. First, WF had a few kids to transfer in from a rival school and there was so much to be said about the personal decisions and rights of these players to transfer. Second, Leesville vs. WF (2011) was probably one of the greatest high school games I have ever seen. I believe most people were looking for a 2012 rematch that resembled the same. Unfortunately, for WF did not live up to their end of that expectation. Third, it has been several years since WF has advanced past the first round of the playoffs and to have to face your biggest rival that sported an 8-2 record at the time, carried a lot of pressure. Now that WF has gotten through the regular season and the first playoff game and all of the adversity and pressure to win that surrounded the program and they now have an 11-1 record with only one loss to a team (Leesville) that many people pick to represent the East in the Title Game, and playing another team (Garner) in the second round that most expect to crush WF and continue to advance to represent the East as well. Now that they have all of those pressure situations behind them and many bloggers did not expect them to make it this far anyway, they really do not have the major pressure on them. Garner is not a rival, and Garner and Leesville are undefeated and the fan expectation is to see this rematch b/t them next week. Garner will probably feel the greater amount of pressure to uphold the fan expectations. This is why I say that Garner has more to lose than WF. Before anyone responds, this is strictly my assessment as a fan and not the assessment of any coach or player. I could be totally off base from what Garner or WF actually thinks or feel

Daniel Evans - Completed 272 of 473 passes for 3,796 yards and 37 TDs as a senior, including five games with over 300 passing yards

Garrett Leatham - Completed 252 passes on 405 attempts for 3,855 yards and 36 touchdowns; Averaged 275 passing yards per game; Only 10 interceptions; Three rushing touchdowns

    Pretty darn close.

Mitch is the best this area has seen since Daniel Evans at Broughton in my opinion. I realize Evans wasn't the greatest QB in college, but the guy was a stud in high school.

Garner saw a dern good QB a few years ago, Garrett Leatham, who is at NC State now. Leatham came in to the game much like Connor Mitch is coming in. Best QB in the area, 25,000 yards passed for the season, several hundred TD's in the season....it was all world time. For the first half Leatham gave Garner all we could handle and it was a close score at the half. Leatham tore up the Garner secondary with ease (or so it looked like) and those of us in the stands were a nervous wreck. One thing Garner was able to do, other than stop their run, was put some very big hits on Leatham which took their toll. I believe Leatham ended up coming out of the game in the 3rd period from all the hits. Not saying that will happen tonight, but Garner has put more than 1 QB out of games before. They knocked Clayton's QB out of the game earlier this season. The Troajns will have to do that again tonight.

    My two cents worth:
Garner has the better defense, and will be the more physical of the two teams. Wakefield as everyone knows can throw the ball on anyone. Wakefield's defense is their weakness and is no match for Garner's offense. Garner is the all-around better team, but that doesn't necessarily translate into a win. Turnovers and penalties will play a huge role in this one. Garner will need to score--a lot. Wakefield will need to score a lot more. I think Garner, but I wouldn't bet money either way. These are two very good football teams.

Been following this forum since last year and have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's insight on high school football in the area. So, decided I'd chime in for the first time. Games like this one (and the LR and MC game) are extemely exciting to me. People say that WF has nothing to lose and I agree, but Garner is in the same boat...Last years accomplishments and this years record mean nothing at this point. Tonight's game will be fun to watch. Mitch is good enough on his own to make any team nervous, but when you add that to the strong supporting cast of WF and no one can look at that team as inferior. As a Garner fan, it's exciting to see a game against a strong unfamiliar opponent. It will be in Garner's best interest to keep this game as low scoring as possible...Long drives that eat up the clock will keep Mitch and Co. from turning this into a shoot out. It's not that I think Garner doesn't have the explosiveness to win a shoot out against WF, but honestly, who would want to test that? If Garner shows up to play the way they are capable of and follow their game plan (no doubt that those coaches have a good one) then they should leave Trojan Stadium tonight with a W. If not, it could turn into a long night! Hoping for a good injury free game...Go Trojans!

Thomas was a special QB on a special Leesville team (let's not forget Taylor Gentry and Zach Greene, Mangum, plus all the other good players on both sides of the ball) and helped to turn Leesville around...I think Mitch is a bit more mobile with his economy of movement and has a better arm (not by much)...I'd go to war with either...hard to quantify leadership - but on the strength of his numbers (plus he's a big QB) I'd have to go with Mitch and that is no slight to Wilson - who lead the team to within a few plays of a title appearance - and remember King left after his junior year...Wilson was (and is at Elon) a very good QB...just an observation (and don't forget Mitch lost some time due to a broken collar bone [vs Leesville]) which impacted his numbers a bit...

If WF #'s 6 and 32 (and that shot he took against Leesville was the biggest hit I've seen all year, and he got up and came back to play! After putting his helmet back on) have big games it could be a long night and IF they can mount a decent run game it will make it more interesting...Garner will be hitting and flying to the ball...If Mitch can weather that aggressive approach early they have a shot...I still don't think Garner fans know what they are in for...But I have no doubt that their coaching staff does...Garner can run the ball and has great backs, and I think an under rated QB (in terms of passing) in Jeffries, he does much more than 'keeping them honest'...Mitch is simply the best QB I've seen come through ths Cap8 or maybe anywhere (including my years in Pa.) - He's been starting for 4 years and I'm sure he doesn't want this to be his last game - good luck to both teams - if Leesville wasn't playing MC tonight I'd be in Garner with my popcorn and my seat warmer although it may be SRO...and WF fans - show up - you don't know how good you've had it for the past 4 years and Garner isn't that far away...
