Keeping local talent in state
Keeping local talent in state
We are being RAIDED!!! Personally I am a former player and ECU fan. NC has been known to produce some stellar defensive players, but over the past few years and even in next year's class...we are producing quality skill players. UNC has done the best job of being able to keep our stars home. (I hate to admit it). My school wants them, but due to the non-BCS factor we can't hold onto them. Look at this year's class. South Carolina has raided our borders much like Tennessee use to. What is it going to take to keep our talent home? 2 of the nations top RB's from last year will potentially carry the load at Georgia (Marshall and Gurley) this year.
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Go to some BCS bowls, and win!! Its the same in basketball. UNC, and Duke wins, and therefore they get the top recruits everyear. I would have loved to see Marshall, Curley, and Mangus play in state football. It all about winning!!
RE: Keeping local talent in state
So what? Geez it's only football. It's not like this has that much of an impact on life you know. If a kid wants to go to a school thats their business.
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Comeonnow,
This thread is not about discrediting a kid's choice. It is about the ability of our in-state schools to recruit the talent here in the State.
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Who really cares if the kids stay jn the state? Really, they are going to go where they feel they are a good fit, really, Georgia or ECU or even Tennessee or ECU?
RE: Keeping local talent in state
By comeonnow, who cares about hockey? How many americans are playing pro hockey. My guess not many. Let me guess you are not really from NC. New York, Boston, Philly, Germany, Cananda, Russia etc...
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Toddler, stay on the subject and the subject is football, not hockey. Secondly, my original post was to highlight the fact that this is a high school sports page and a guy is trying to get in state colleges/universities to recruit in state players from high school ( as if they don't). I doubt any coach in the University system is looking at high school OT for recruiting tips. If a kid wants to go out of state than thats their decision. State, UNC, Duke, Wake and ohter schools within NC recruit many players. I doubt they are intentionally recruiting out of state. It's just stupid to make such a post about recruiting in state talent.

Pirate, you mean you don't think State,UNC,Wake,Duke and others are NOT recruiting from in the state? Do you have some inside info others don't?
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Until local universities start taking a more serious approach to their football programs, i.e, hiring National Championship level coaches, North Carolina will always lose the states top high school players to more established collegiate programs. what can any "local" school offer kids like gurley, marshall, mangus, or that QB from wakefield, that surrounding SEC and ACC schools can't. The easiest and quickest fix must start with coaching....get more nationally known coaches and the talent WILL follow, whether instate or not, then once the winning happens you will start to be able to keep you higher ranked instate talent....Look at South Carolina before and after they hired Lou Holtz, he started it and Spurrier is taking it to the next level...10 years ago it seemed like all of SC talent went to Fla, GT, Ala, Fla st. etc....now the games have signed the last 6 Mr.SC football players...I believe it can happen here but it's got to start with the coaching. JMO..
RE: Keeping local talent in state
Why don't you list the names of "National Championship level" coaches currently looking for jobs? Butch Davis took Miami to a national Championship. Steve Spurrier was at Duke, think he won a few, Chuck Amato was involved in a few himself . Give me a break. Spurrier taking it to the next level at S. Carolina???? sheesh you are reaching. When was SC in the hunt for a national championship since Spurrier got there? Keeping local talent in NC...... get a grip. Kids go where they want to go. I doubt the best footall players in the state are not being recruited by NC schools, the kids choose to go somewhere else because they want to. Good for them.
RE: Keeping local talent in state
I never said local school didn't recruit instate....they just aren't winning the recruiting game...I didn't say that there are any current National Championship level coaches available to hire either...I said that's what it will take....if that doesn't happen then this convo will remain the same every year!!!!.....and South Carolina joined the SEC in 1990 rarely won more than 5 games, except for one Carquest Bowl season in 94...AND ALL THE in state talent went everywhere except SC!!!Hire Holtz beat Ohio State in Back to Back Outback bowls, hire Spurrier win 8-10 games a year with the majority of your roster being home grown talent...Period! And you get a grip!!! Keyboard gangster...stat how you feel but you don't have to get personal with me telling me to get a grip...you wouldn't do it to someones face so don't get overzealous because we typing.
