Spring Football in NC

Spring Football in NC

Okay, How do we get Spring Football in NC. Just check out this link that Carolina Preps1 tweeted. (Below) Clearly we are not as football crazy as Fl or TX, but we are a state where major schools come to for talent. So, lets hear your arguements against or for....

I vote Yes for Spring Ball....imagine Spring Ball Jamboree's (Hillside vs WFR) sounds good.

RE: Spring Football in NC

I got a quick question. What exactly can a high school football team do in the month of May in North Carolina? Can they wear their helmets and or pads at all?

RE: Spring Football in NC

21 players per day for "skill development". Helmets and shoulder pads permitted.

RE: Spring Football in NC

I've never heard of such a thing as No Spring Football, why is that like this in N.C...Maybe not have teams "compete" against each other but why not allow coaches to see there teams in shoulder pads and helmets for a week....Does anyone know the reason it's not allowed?

RE: Spring Football in NC

I don't think that NC needs to have 'spring football' in the form that is seen in FL, TX, GA, etc. At the same time, I think that a better delineation of the rules and framework for 'spring football' or workouts could be worked on to allow programs and schools that want to work more to have the ability to do so.

The reality is that at the moment - a well organized program - can get a ton accomplished in the spring within NC. Don't fool yourself about this...you don't need to have the 'allowance' for contact in the spring to get a ton accomplished. In a well organized system, lifting, agility and speed work can take place. Moreover, implementation of offensive, defensive and special teams structures can occur in the current form. Is it tough with the 21 rule, yes, but not impossible. Also, chalk talk, film study and most importantly position specific fundamentals can be worked on. And the reality is that unless the rules have changed over the past few years you can have essentially the entire spring to do this work.

Student-athletes that don't desire to specialize and would rather participate in multiples sports should have that opportunity, but at the same time in a well organized system, those that do wish to specialize can do that under the current rules.

Still, I think removing the cap of 21 and simply restricting contact and full-speed scrimmages would allow a ton to get done in the spring for those programs that choose to go that route.

RE: Spring Football in NC

The problem with your suggestion is that if you allow teams more than 21 all spring, you will sound the death knell of spring sports at some schools (yes, some already suffer even with the 21 rule). Given free reign to practice their entire team all spring, there are many coaches who would, indeed, practice their entire team all spring and try to keep players away from baseball, track, lacross, etc. Once you get a few doing it, many others will follow suit so that they don't get "left behind". Slippery slope, huge can of worms to use a few cliches.

RE: Spring Football in NC

oldtime - and that is unfortunate in all seriousness. If prep athletes desire to play multiple sports than they should have the opportunity and the coaches of sports out of season should be the last ones to discourage this. The issue there in my opinion is not with the rules and allowing more than 21, it's an issue with coaches within a school RESPECTING one another. In the end this is about the student-athlete and the parents/guardians of those student-athletes. If they desire to be a year-around athlete in a specific sport than so be it. But if they desire the opposite than that should be available and the coaches should respect that wish. The more coaches at a school communicate with one another the more sports like football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse and track can coexist. And if those coaches worked well together the reality is that the student-athlete that played two or three sports would probably end up with some inventive scheduling to be one of the top contributors in all of the sports.

But back to the 21 rule. I'm not saying completely remove the cap, but I think up it to at least 22 would be appropriate. Although as I said, I don't think that rule currently hinders any program from doing a ton in the offseason. But it comes down to how organized and well those coaches communicate with other coaches.

Let me go a step further and say that if you have a situation where an out-of-season coach is dominating the direction of a student-athlete outside of season, then the AD should be involved. The AD should be the advocate for ALL of their sports.

RE: Spring Football in NC

Football already gets way more in the number of players they can work with in 21 than the other sports. For example football gets 21, basketball only gets 4. A reasonable argument would be for basketball to get to work with 9, one less than a complete team. So before football should get any cap taken off, the other sports will have to have some kind of change toward the less than one to make a team.

RE: Spring Football in NC/agent of change:

Let me tell you guys how it's done in Ga. anybody who are going out for the football team in the summer that's not playing another sport we have spring practice two week before school close and a blue and white game like they do in college on the last day of practice at night. You will be surprise how much work the coaches get done. Plus some time we even have college recruiters at the practices checking kids out they might be interested in. I'm seen some good players in Ga. like Cam Newton play in his first high school game,Eric Berry a SS with the kansas City Chief etc. so many good players but talent wise the kids in NC are just as talent but these kids down here in Ga.take the game very serious that's why so many of them go D1 they get personal trainer and go to specialized camps for their positions. The coaches,AD's and the NCHSAA must all agree in order to have spring practice. I have notified several high profile schools in NC about a special game they have every year in Atlanta where they invite three teams that is not from GA. as far away as Los Angeles,ST. Louis,Mo., Miss.,Florida.,etc. and the sponsor was going to give the teams from NC.,SC.,and north Fla. 1000 tickets at $10 dollars a piece and the teams keep all the money from the tickets they sell to help with their traveling expenses buses and hotel. That's $10,000 if they sell all the tickets and they will play some of the best teams in Ga.,5A/6A teams like Camden County High School,Colquit County High School,North Gwinett High School,Stephenson High School who had 15 D1 propects who is graduating two weeks from now and had 25 kids go to school from the 2010 team I have seen these teams play and the kids are no better than the NC kids athletic wise. I don't know what the coaches and AD's in NC. are afraid of. If anybody out there have any contact with the people at NB,J.H.Rose,WFR,Havelock,Scotland County,Richmond County,Mallard Creek,Butler, ask them why they don't play more out of state teams.

RE: Spring Football in NC

I've been up here for 2 years from SC..and its just a different culture football wise...it seems to me that NC always finds reasons not to do instead of doing....its almost how the FBS says they can't have a playoff, yet the rest of college football D1AA on down settle their championship on the field...Its disheartening because with some small tweeks to the system NC could hold their own with the rest of the surrounding states in the southeast....

RE: Spring Football in NC

I agree 100 per cent that it could be done easily with no problems if the coaches,AD's, and the NCHSAA wanted to,the talent is in NC but like you said they always have an excuse why it isn't beneficial to them or some other reasons why they can't. When you even try to tip them to somethings you see the top teams in other states are during some coaches get offended, nobody do everything and if you can learn somethings new you take it and run with it if it will help you and your team to get better. Some coaches got to understand also that most kids look up to them more so than their own father and got to help them understand the important of during the right thing in school and in the community not just use them to win games, some kids just need a little more attention and some tough love and if a kid live in a bad home the coach should take more interest and understanding when the kid isn't during the right thing. When a coach can get 25 of his players in college in a season that program is during the right thing in trying to help the kids in life and the future.
