Can't imagine the PAC-6 without Southern Durham
It's a shame what is happening to my Alma Mater. The N.C. High School Athletic Association alignment situation does not go into affect until 2014 so why are they making this decision to move Southern along with many other schools so quickly?
RE: Can't imagine the PAC-6 without Southern Durham
Wasn't too long ago that Hillside and Southern Durham were in a 3A conference. It just happens.

dbcity2004 - Southern has only been in the PAC-6 since it moved up to 4A along with Hillside and ECH probably 7 years ago. Southern hasn't always been in the PAC-6. Northern Durham, Riverside and Jordan have, but that was based on size of the schools. That said, all of these schools whether they were in the same conference or not made a point to schedule one another via non-conference games. I'm sure Southern will still play most of the Durham schools, if not all of them via non-conference schedules.
RE: Can't imagine the PAC-6 without Southern Durham
durhamfbfan- I know that my friend. When I played at Southern we were in the Five County 3A Conference which we dominated and we moved to the PAC-6 in 2005. The reason I say this is because when Southern entered the PAC-6 we put a stamp on Southern Durham becoming the premier program not only in the PAC-6 but in Durham period by dethroning once mighty Northern Durham who ruled that conference with an iron fist for decades. Actually the changing of the guard happened in 2004 our last year in the Five County 3A when we were nationally ranked and went to Northern and shut them out 14-0. Personally and along with my former teammates it means a lot to us. We were the program that changed the culture of dominance by Northern not only in the Bull City but in the PAC-6 after decades of frustration. The conference has provided us with one of the top rivalries in the state in Southern Durham/Hillside. Congrats to Hillside now they have been the top dog since 2010. Now even though they will still play that rivalry will no longer determine who wins the PAC-6. Also it's almost certain that we will not play all of the Durham schools in the future. It just stinks period but hopefully the enrollment numbers will continue to improve and we will be back in the PAC-6 when they do their next evaluation. It's more of a personal thing with me along with many other great Southern Durham Alumni. We made history.

I understand - it's not ideal at all. I'd personally like to see all of the Durham schools in the same conference.
I would add that Jordan was the school that began to change the tide in Durham. Jordan knocked off Northern Durham in 2000. It was the first loss by a Durham opponent in 69 attempts against Northern. Jordan also shared the PAC-6 crown with Northern and Chapel Hill that year. I would not disagree that Southern with Coach Barbour at the helm and then especially once Coach Walters took over really began to change the tide in Durham. From 1999 and prior it was Northern Durham. And then from about 2000 to 2006 it was essentially a battle between Jordan, Southern and Northern. Northern was on a bit of decline. Jordan was much improved and in a position to challenge and Southern was also beginning to assert themselves. Around 2006 and forward, Hillside began to really make their push along with Southern and I think from there forward it was Hillside and Southern leading the way with Jordan close behind until recently.
In my opinion, Southern has been consistently good to above average since back in 2000. Hillside has steadily improved beginning 2005 to 2006. Jordan improved from about 2000 and semi peaked around 2006ish and then have steadily declined it seems.
