Players and Social Media Questions
Just wanted to see how common it was for you guys to notice/hear about a high school coach patrolling his players' tweets? Also if you have heard of this have you ever heard of a punishment being given, whether it is in season/or in the off-season for what the player tweeted?
The past few years I have coached, I have felt there should be a separation between coaches and their players social networks. Have just felt the kids have a right to what they say on their social networks at the high school level. They are still kids and are different than college athletes because they aren't on scholarship, and aren' t representing the school from a national standpoint. But I have heard recently HS coaches are starting to patrol social networks. Just wondered what you guys have heard/think. Thanks.
RE: Players and Social Media Questions
I don't see a problem with kids being on a social media. If the coach has a rule in place with kids then they shouldn't break team rules. Times have changed and kids have a larger platform to speak from. It will be tough for coaches to monitor kids with all this technology.
RE: Players and Social Media Questions
To the coaches, I'd say patrol away. They are representing you and the school when they're in the community. As a representative of the school, you are held to higher standards.
To the players, I'd say it's pretty simple. Don't tweet stuff that you wouldn't say to you coach, to the media, and to your parents.

I agree with Nick.
Athletes also run the risk of losing college interest directly as a result of social media. These outlets are double edged swords. If they are serious about playing college sports, now is the time to cultivate that portion of their character which is plainly visible to everyone. If a coach is "patrolling" rest assured he/she has the players' (and schools') best interest at heart.

Leading cause of fights in school - tweets and facebook posts

lazydawg58...don't blame technology for kids fighting. If anything we should be happy we can at least get to the bottom of any tweets and posts. Before the kids would fight we would not know who started it.
