deuce3rffr - could be lots of reasons and then there could be not one good reason at all. That's how recruiting works - no textbook and what one thinks should happen often doesn't and what does is often unexpected. Add to that, the type of recruiting that grabs headlines, mostly D-IA stuff is simply not what the vast majority of kids are going to experience for numerous reasons.
Rather than speculate on the why's, as there could be numerous ones. Number one, if there is a D-III program somewhere that he and family are interested in. Contact them ASAP and initiate contact. No athletic scholarships, but depending on need the school will see what packages can be developed. Obviously, in these situations one has to assess cost vs. football and all other elements. Going D-III simply to be able to play ball, when a great school right next door that costs much less with just as good academics, but perhaps without the opportunity to play ball, may be a better choice.
Even at this stage I would imagine that some D-II's may still have some slots as well as the small percentage of D-IAA schools. I say this out of experience as I had at least one player many years ago sign with a D-IAA school into JUNE prior to his frosh season, believe it or not. So, I would initiate contact ASAP, determine status at those locations and if there is a possibility get the info they need ASAP and see how it goes.
Final option is thinking invited walk-on perhaps. If talent wise it fits, there is the possibility, especially if one of the larger schools was actively recruiting him to inquire on this front. It means you have to pay, but if the school is the right fit and the program has a quality invited/preferred program, then that might be the best fit. And in some of these cases, the possibility of earning scholarship money a year or two in may exist.

Nice post durhamfbfan. Anyone who has played fantasy football will tell you that you cannot always predict future performance based on last years performance. There is sometimes a herd mentality in recruiting. This can be good and it can be bad. Getting the first offer is big. When a coach asks a player if he has any offers and the player says no, the coach is thinking "why not, am I missing something." If a player picks up multiple offers, then the offers really start coming in, no one wants to be left out. Keith Marshal is going to be good, but I would venture a guess that some schools offered him without ever seeing him on film or in person. Recruiting is not an exact science. It is hard to tell (more so with linemen) who is going to pan out in four or five years. Just because you did not get a scholarship does not mean that you are not good, you simply may have been missed. There are prep schools and JUCO if you want a second chance at getting recruited. Keep after it and good luck.

so one thing.. you mentioned he was academically qualified... but he could be looked upon as an academic risk. Schools can afford to take some risk academically, but they can't afford to have all 20 scholarship players for that class to be an academic risk. I'm only speculating here... my suggestion would be to start with the coach, find out if anyone was interested, etc... go from there.
