RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
I don't care what the N&O says, not all the schools in the Tri-9 are in favor of this mega conference move. That I can promise you.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
Why do you suppose it is that Panther Creek and Green Hope are the only schools without a say in what happens to them? This all started because the PAC6 was losing two teams. It was proposed they split up and go to other conferences but they said no. It was proposed that Southern Alamance move to the PAC6 but they said no. Everyone is calling PC and GH selfish when all of these other schools are getting the opportunity to say no but they are not. These schools have 600 and 1000 more students than most schools in the PAC6 and in many of the cases offer double the sports. Therefore many of their teams will still have to play in the Tri9 anyway. I have no idea how Harnett Central even got into this mess...oh yeah....it was a computer program...right. Why can't they just stay where they've been? I could google all of the addresses and come up with the same result for a lot less money but it still doesn't make it right. If Hillside wants to play football powerhouses, as one post explains, it is not a secret that will not happen in Cary. Is all of this really necessary? None of it makes sense. It's very sad to see all of the anger.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
dumbest idea I have ever heard..won't fly with NCHSAA either
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
The Tri9 as it is proposed is actually "compactness" friendly for Harnett Central. I think all the teams are under an hour away with nearby F-V being a natural rival. I haven't done the millage for GNC schools but the average is probably slightly higher.
But HC has been in the process of developing rivalries with the GNC schools. Winning the conference football championship certainly helped in that regard. Southeast Raleigh vs Harnett Central has been especially great and boy did we shock the conference with the soccer run we had two years ago. It is sad that we will in all likelihood be moving on again. Another negative with the move to the Tri9 is school size. In the GNC there were some really big schools like Garner but most were midsize 4As, and SSS was a small 4A like us. When we move to the Tri9 we will be a one of the smallest 4As in the state with about 1440 students going up against six of the largest schools in the state.
But all of that is understandable if not ideal. What would be unreasonable would be moving us out of a conference with several similar school in it where we were developing rivalries and instead placing us in a mega conference where we will primarily play much larger schools and in addition travel significantly further and see our opportunities to play out of conference limited by the large numbers.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
It is interesting that all these people are saying all of the schools are in a agreement with this mega conference. Even if that is true, the backlash from the parents would be crazy. And it should be. At this point, I doubt seriously that the NCHSAA will go for this proposition at this point anyway.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
There is no added burden on HC for a "Mega Conference". They will only play the schools in their division until the final game which is basically the current conference.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
ballcoach- from the N&O "football teams would play intra-division foes once and have two or three games with the other side." They also talked about "saving your endowment game till the last week of the year and then maybe try to pair up your No. 1 and No.2 in this division with your No. 1 and No. 2 in this division and play them out in Durham County Stadium or something like that." (Wayne Bragg, Green Hope AD)
But more importantly look at the big picture, not just football. Basketball teams would play a 19 game conference schedule with intra-division teams meeting twice and every other team once. There are no divisions for all sports other than football and basketball. So think about how this affects soccer, tennis, softball, cross country, track, and baseball.
It's not that great a hardship for a school centrally located like Panther Creek, Cary, Green Hope or Athens Drive since they are traveling north or south about equal distances away. If you are an outlier like Harnett Central and Roxboro it's a significant haul. Heck I can't imagine Fuquay-Varina could be that pleased with the idea.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
It all depends how they do it. If they split into 2 divisions and only play 1 cross divisional "championship game" and other games that same week at the end of the season to determine final conference standings (2v2, 3v3, 4v4 etc), i can see a lot of positives. They will also need to work out something for all sports. I don't see the problem with doing it the same way for all sports. The concept has merit. It's the implementation of the concept that will need work. People make things harder than they need to be by trying to simply copy what colleges do. This can be great for high school sports if done right.
RE: Panther Creek & Green Hope's Selfish Idea
So what exactly is the benefit of such a conference? I'm talking as a whole not what is the benefit for a couple of schools. How is this proposal a benefit for the 14 teams that will be involved? I don't see any up side that overcomes the negatives.
