Two players who competed in the doubles championship a year ago advanced to the semifinals in singles competition on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men's tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Joey Hatala of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and Matt Daly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won their first two matches in straight sets to advance to Saturday's semifinals, with Daly dropping only one game in four sets.

Hatala had teamed with Andrew Treske last year to win the 2010 doubles title, beating Daly and Chris Geaslen in the finals.

Hatala will face Western Alamance's Eric Greene in one semifinal while Daly takes on Charlotte Catholic's Kyle Johnson, who lost only three games in four sets on the opening day of play.

In doubles, the Cardinal Gibbons team of Geaslen and Killian Steer took a pair of easy wins and will face Owen Fike and Adam Glover of Southern Nash in the semifinals. The other pairing in the semifinals has Alex Southard and Logan Williams of Northern Guilford) going against Morris Porter and Tito Poplawski of Asheville.

The Asheville pair had to battle past Jarod Styres and Aaron Weber of Chapel Hill in a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals.

  7. NickStevensHSOT: Btw stating facts doesn't make someone a hater. Haters fail to see reality despite the facts. Like I said, Lebron is the best in the world.

  8. NickStevensHSOT: Don't get me wrong, Lebron is the BEST player in the WORLD. But he goes missing at key times too often. Always has.

  11. NickStevensHSOT: (Re: last tweet) That is a gripe I have with basketball at all levels, from youth, to high school, to college, to the NBA.

  12. NickStevensHSOT: On another note if it's a foul in the first minute, it's a foul in the last minute, it's a foul in OT. The rules don't change with the time.

  13. ZachMayoHSOT: Free throws, free throws, free throws. It all comes down the free throws. Make them at the end and you're golden.

  14. NickStevensHSOT: But hey, #shoutout to the NBA for producing such an amazing game. Can't wait to see what they have planned for us on Thursday. #Fixed
