Tri-Nine releases conference tournament schedule

The Tri-Nine Conference released the official conference tournament brackets on Saturday morning.

First round games for both boys and girls will be held on Tuesday at the higher seed. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. Where there are double-headers, girls will play at 5:30 p.m., and boys at 7 p.m.

Semifinal games for boys and girls will be held at Athens Drive High School on Wednesday.

The championship games will be held at Athens Drive on Friday. Girls will play at 6 p.m., followed by boys at 7:30 p.m.

Last season, the Tri-Nine had a play-in game for  the eighth and ninth seeds, however that game was abolished this season. The ninth seeded team does not make the conference tournament and the season is officially over for them.

Panther Creek and Apex boys finished tied in the conference standings for third after both teams pulled upsets on Friday night. The two teams split during the season, but Apex had a larger margin of victory so the Cougars get the third seed. Panther Creek will be the fourth seed.

There was also a tie for second place in the girls between Middle Creek and Holly Springs. Again, both teams split during the regular season, but neither team had a best win over the other.

To break the tie, the Tri-Nine looked at both teams' games with Green Hope, but neither beat the Falcons this season. The next tie-breaker was the record of both teams against the next best team - Cary. Middle Creek swept Cary while Holly Springs split with the Imps, so the Mustangs got the No. 2 seed over the Hawks. No random draw took place.

Game 1: (1) Middle Creek vs. (8) Fuquay-Varina - Tuesday, 7:00

The schedules discussed in the article above would be much more useful if dates were given for the scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday games. Are they the week of the 13th or the 20th?

Time out

Correction on boys tiebreaker - Margin of victory is not a tie-breaker per the NCHSAA tiebreaking procedure. Apex's higher seed over Panther Creek is by virtue of their win against top dog, Middle Creek. See Competition section 42(B(3).
