Southern Durham junior running back Legrande Harley was injured during the Spartans game against New Hanover Friday night.

Harley went down with a neck injury and remained on the field for half an hour while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

There was not an ambulance on site,  the first unit to respond to the game was the fire department. Harley was initially unconscious but regained consciousness and was moving by the time the paramedics arrived.

Harley was transported by EMS to Duke Hospital.

I've been to a other area high school games and noticed that no ambulance was there. Football is a sport that several hundreds of hours are played and hundreds of thousands participate in and injuries occur regularly. It is a violent sport in which a life threatening injury can occur in an instant. It should be required by the state high school athletic association that EMT's and ambulances with life support equipment be at all games being held. It is unexcusable that this gentleman had to lay there and wait for medical assistance.

At the HS I work at we have an ambulance on campus for the duration of each game.

HOW IN THE HECK DID IT TAKE 30 MINUTES FOR AN AMBULANCE TO GET TO THE STADIUM?!? Man I hope that Legrande is okay. Prayers go out to him and his family.

It's the city of Durham and Durham county Schools System what else would you expect. half hour response time again to be expected from emergency services in Durham. Is it acceptable hell no but it's typical Durham

I just read this story and am horrified! My son has played football for Nash-Rocky Mount Schools for the last four years and I believe there have always been ambulances at his games - home and away. This is a travesty and I hope and pray that Legrande will be okay. This is definitely something Durham needs fixed - and FAST!

In most cases, the school has to pay for an ambulance to be at the game and with budgets these days.... Having an athletic trainer should be on site regardless, especially when the wait time is 30 min.
Too little time

this story was not fact checked. The ambulance arrived within 8 minutes and the athlete was transported 11 minutes later. WRAL needs to confirm facts before posting. The 911 call and arrival times for all public safety units are a matter of public record.

And to those who demand an ambulance to be on site, who pays for it? Who will staff it? EMS agencies around the state are short staffed. This is an unrealistic expectation. And what about JV football? what about soccer, lacrosse, and every other sport? Those sports also have risk. Should they have an ambulance there too? This is about putting a Certified Athletic Trainer in the schools, not the availability of EMS.

It sounds like it's a little questionable as to whether or not there was a delay. Hortonatc sounds like he has some pretty specific information. Maybe the perception of a delay in EMS response arose from a delay in calling 911? Be that as it may,it's not realistic to expect an ambulance at every high school football game. Durham EMS routinely takes ambulances out of service because they do not have the personnel to staff the vehicles. It's not surprising they have manpower shortages. Durham EMS pays less than any other county service in the area, and they run more calls than any other service. The paramedics haven't had a raise in three years. Why is anyone surprised by staffing shortages?
