Defending state champs must forfeit win

Sep 2, 2010

A.C. Reynolds, the defending 4-A state champion, will forfeit their first win of the 2010 season due to the use of an ineligible player, said Que Tucker, deputy commissioner of the N.C. High School Athletic Association.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported an athlete who transferred to Reynolds from Asheville High School had started high school in 2006. Rules only allow athletes to be eligible for athletics for four years or eight semesters, starting on the first day an athlete is enrolled in high school.

The athlete, who has not been identified, participated in Reynolds' Aug. 20, game against West Forsyth. The NCHSAA  ruled that Reynolds must forfeit that 20-14 win, Tucker said.

NCHSAA rules state that if a player dresses out for a game, then they have participated in the game, even if they do not step foot on the field.

Reynolds is expected to appeal the NCHSAA decision.

The Rockets defeated Harnett Central last year in the NCHSAA 4-A state championship game in Raleigh, 14-13.

Reynolds (0-1) will host Owen (1-1) on Friday.

This is cut and dry in the rule book, The same thing happened to Carver 2 yrs ago against West Forsyth. I think the appeal would be denied because so many teams in the past have gotten burnt on this issue. They would have to change games from the past. It's the endowment game and ACR will probably win the next 10 games and it won't matter.

Bout time. Lots of high schools are doing things such as this. The biggest crime by HS is recruiting kids from another area. Got to be stopped. That is why the same schools are on top much of the time.

The infraction did not occur last season. As it says in the story, they're forfeiting the first win of the 2010 season (this season).

They infraction occurred last season. they should be stripped of the championship. All this tells the kids is that its ok to cheat a little bit.

Hold the penalty. Actually it should be tougher. Making it not worth it for the school will stop some of this cheating that is going on.
