Pinecrest, Union Pines likely barred from state playoffs

Aug 30, 2010

Officials determined on Sunday that three players from Pinecrest High School's football team and three players from Union Pines High School's football team were ejected for fighting during a bench-clearing brawl on Friday night.

Kellum Fipps, the booking agent for the Southeastern Football Officials Association, told HighSchoolOT.com on Sunday that no other players or coaches were ejected for any other reason.

"There were a lot of people on the field, but the focus of the meeting today was to identify the players that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, were really fighting," Fipps said.

According to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Handbook, any team who totals three ejections during the season for fighting will be barred from the state playoffs.

Que Tucker, deputy director of the NCHSAA, was not ready to make a statement about playoff implications Sunday.

"I will need to hear from both parties as well as review the report from the officials before making that decision," Tucker said via e-mail Sunday night.

In addition, any player who is ejected for fighting is subject to a two-game suspension, and both schools are subject to a $1,000 fine from the NCHSAA. A player ejected for any other reason is subject to a one-game suspension.

Tucker said the NCHSAA will attempt to sort out the situation Monday or Tuesday.

During a punt play with 4:29 left in the second quarter, while the ball was in the air, something happened along the line of scrimmage that sparked what Fipps classified as a "bench-clearing brawl."

"Both teams, including the coaching staffs and substitutes, left the bench and came onto the field," Fipps said. "According to the definition, anyone who leaves the bench during a fight is subject to being ejected, but it was nearly impossible in this instance to determine who all was on the field."

Fipps said video always helps in a situation like this, but when he asked both schools for video of the incident, they both said none existed.

"It's not a requirement for them to tape action between plays, but each year I remind them that if something like this happens, it's probably going to happen during a dead ball," Fipps said.

This weekend, Fipps asked the schools if a parent may have been taping the game and had caught the brawl on tape. According to Fipps, the athletic directors are supposed to be looking into that possibility.

"The worst scenario from the perspective of the schools is for someone to have video of this thing and put it up on YouTube," said Fipps.

Pinecrest won the game 69-14.

lauraleigh and volley chick I applaud your faithfullness to the coach and the school. You have to understand that running up the score on a helpless opponent is not a good way to show young men how to be good role models. Let me say it again ( you were up by 30 OR more pts. and you go for a two point conversion and a on side kick the ball!) You are honestly defending that. You honestly think that didn't have effect on the fight.

UP is now 3A. Has been 3A since 2001.

durhamfbfan- You try telling that to three of my best friends. Try telling them to walk away. Like you said, emotions run high. And like Lil Wayne says, question our swag and you get yourself an answer.

You know what. If someone rips your helmet off. You know what you do. You walk away. You let the guy that ripped your helmet off, get ejected. You let the guys on his team that want to support him, get ejected. You then pick your helmet up, strap it back on, live to play another down, and then play your heart out and show the other team within the rules and regulations of the game what it means to do things right.

And finally, after you win the game and have done things right. You watch and hear how another team is barred from the playoffs while you still get to play.

That said, these are kids and emotions can run high and sometimes things happen and it is unfortunate and I'm sure that everyone involved is upset and wish things had been different. Again, none of us are perfect we all make mistakes. The question is always what we learn from the mistakes we have made. Ultimately, life will go on.

We at Pinecrest High School are not trying to say that what happened was good, however, the three players ejected are very good friends. All three of them agree that smack talking came from both sides, but the helmet being ripped off? That was from the opposing team. When that happened, everything from there on out was self defense. This bench-clearing brawl? It wasn't a brawl. The only reason the bench cleared was to pull all Pinecrest Patriots off the field to stop the commotion. If you were at that game, you would certainly understand our frustration. All three players are ready to withstand the consequences because that is how Coach Metzger taught them to respond. Yes, they are gentleman, but you can't expect a gentleman to do nothing when his helmet has just been ripped off. Protecting the team is what we as Pinecrest Patriots intend to do.

What's really sad about the whole situation is the players who weren't involved in this brawl will pay for the actions of a few. What a shame.

When I played at PHS we understood the consequences of our actions - Coach Foxx smiling saying run ladies run.

bullcityfootball - I have to laugh at your comment. PHS is a 4A school because of its size; for years and years little 2A UP whooped the tar out of us.

Now. I used to work at PHS, and everything I've seen of Coach Metzger's staff, I've been impressed with. Their conduct in the classroom and around campus has been stellar. We also have had a STRONG moral and athletic leader in Metzger's predecessor, Coach Bucholz. Fine men, both of them. The boys who've come up through the PHS program don't have any excuses for not being good men, however their football careers wound up.

I understand the support for Coach Metzer and the Pinecrest fans but just because you got beat up in the past is no excuse to take it out on a little 2A team. You can't rationlize running up the score on somebody because it's been ran up on you in the past! They were up by 30 or more and attempted a 2 point coversion and onside kick. That move might have cost them a playoff run!

Yes, Terry T, it is... For years....Pinecrest was not prepared to compete for a host of reasons, and I am not saying it is a good thing for a team to get slaughtered on the scoreboard....my point is that Pinecrest has taken plenty of lickings and I don't think , until now, that anyone realized how great they have become. Heck, the coaching staff for UP trained under Coach Metzger. What in the world did they expect. They have the inside on all of this and knew they needed to prepare for the meet...regardless, it is an unfortunate incident to have happened. In an earlier post,my point about coaches duplicating what he does was meant for their training....I truely do not think Coach Metzger condones fighting on the field...Quite the contrary...he calls his players gentleman because that is what he teaches. It is a shame that a few egos, despite his training, just could not resist the temptations.Hang in their Coach"M"....Proud Patriots regardless of what happens and we support you!
