Schools cancel sporting events, state gymnastics meet postponed

Jan 29, 2010

A large winter storm is heading to North Carolina, and northeasterly winds are chilling down the state for it. Snow, sleet and freezing rain could fall for as long as 24 hours across most of the state from late Friday.

"All of this adds up to the potential for a very potent winter storm for us," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Waring to the entire HighSchoolOT.com coverage area on Thursday. The warning goes into effect Friday evening and lasts through Saturday night.

The entire WRAL-TV viewing area is included in the warning.

"We are looking at 12 hours of heavy hitting, between midnight Friday and about noon Saturday," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said of the likelihood for precipitation.

"The big question is do we continue with snow Saturday, or do we turn over to sleet," Fishel said.

The timing of that transition will determine how much accumulation any given area will see. If the changeover is delayed, snow accumulations will run higher, Fishel said.

Along with the precipitation come winds and falling temperatures.

"What does fall is going to stick around for a while, so travel’s going to be tough (and) there may be power outages," Gardner said.

Those planning to travel should consider alternate plans as "travel may become dangerous," according to the weather service.

With the inclement weather in the forecast, schools and athletic departments are taking notice. The weather is forcing many schools to change game times or even cancel events scheduled for this weekend.

Some schools moved basketball games from Friday to Thursday in hopes of getting them in before the bad weather arrived. Others are going to try to play the games on Friday.

The state gymnastics meet was supposed to be held on Saturday, but the meet has been postponed until Feb. 4 and Feb. 5.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association postponed the Western Piedmont Softball Rules Clinic to Feb. 7th due to the storm. The clinic will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Newton-Conover High School.

NCHSAA officials were also forced to cancel the Triangle Softball Clinic and Triangle Softball Association meeting, as well as the Triangle Baseball Clinic & Capitol Area Umpires Association.

If your school changes athletic events, please let us know as soon as possible. You can send an email to sports@wral.com or click here to report the change.
