Greenfield sends Southern Wayne packing in Glaxo

Dec 29, 2009

Wilson Greenfield made sure its inaugural trip to the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational wouldn’t be a short one as the Knights defeated Southern Wayne, 68-54, in the consolation bracket of the Summit Hospitality portion of the GSK.

The Knights led by only four at halftime, but expanded that lead to 10 after three quarters.

“There was a lot better effort tonight by Greenfield, as compared to Saturday, especially from the defensive end,” Greenfield coach Rob Salter said. “Our goal was to come in and win this thing because we felt like we had the talent to do it. We’re trying to get ready for February and March and playing against these kinds of teams will definitely get us ready for that.”

Greenfield, which will play for fifth place on Wednesday at 12:40 p.m., was led by Drake recruit Jeremy Jeffers’ 22 points and South Carolina recruit Brian Richardson’s 14 points. Sam Hughes added 13 for the Knights while Darian Cahill had 12.

Southern Wayne, a traditional 3A force in Eastern North Carolina, was paced by Justin Artis’ 21 points and Rashadd Hill’s 10 points.

The loss was the final game for Southern Wayne in the 2009 GSK, as there is not a seventh-place game.

“We’d like to thank the Glaxo for inviting Southern Wayne to this tournament,” Southern Wayne senior guard Gary Woodard said. “It was a good experience for us to come out here and play hard with the talent levels that were out here on the court.”
