Tri-9 conference champion Middle Creek was well-represented in the 2009 all-conference awards.
The conference released the awards after Middle Creek and Fuquay-Varina both lost in the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association's state playoffs.
Middle Creek coach Sean Crocker was named the coach of the year, leading his Mustangs to an outright conference championship. Middle Creek was undefeated in conference play, and posted a 12-2 record overall.
The 12 wins for the Mustangs was a school record, and the team advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs where they lost to Harnett Central, 14-8.
Middle Creek's Matt Laxton was named the defensive player of the year.
Fuquay-Varina running back Cory Hunter brought home the offensive player of the year award. The junior rushed for 2,100 yards this season and earned his first scholarship offer from New Mexico.
Apex senior Steve Weiss was named the conference's special teams player of the year.
Middle Creek placed two players on the first team for offense; quarterback Garrett Leatham who was close to 4,000 passing yards this season, and wide receiver Devonte Knox.
Fuquay-Varina's Robert Rhodes and Shaun Underwood were named first team offensive linemen, and Nate Budde, the quarterback for the Bengals, was put on the first team as an athlete.
Coaches in the Tri-9 voted on the all-conference team. There was no media influence in the awards.
