Hillside jumped out to a 7-0 lead early, but Middle Creek stormed back and hung on to claim the 24-29 victory.
Brandon China caught a 48 yard pass from Vad Lee in the first quarter, scoring the first touchdown for the Hornets, and Hillside went into the second quarter up 7-0.
Middle Creek got hot in the second.
Garrett Leatham found Stephen Sladek from 14 yards out to tie the game at 7-7, then Donte Knox caught a three yard pass from Leatham to put the Mustangs on top 14-7.
Leatham struck one last time in the second quarter on a four yard touchdown run, and the Mustangs went into the half up 21-7.
Matt Frongello extended Middle Creek's lead to 24-7 in the third quarter when he hit a 37-yard field goal.
Frongello's field goal was the last score of the game for Middle Creek, leaving the door open for a Hillside comeback.
Later in the third quarter, Mike Brown caught a 12 yard pass from Lee, but the extra-point failed, leaving the score at 24-13.
Hillside got another chance in the fourth quarter when China ran in from one yard out to cut the lead to 24-19, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
Middle Creek's defense held on in the fourth quarter to secure the second round win for the Mustangs.
Next week, Middle Creek will advance to play Harnett Central for the right to go to the 4-A Eastern Regional Final.
