RALEIGH — The "Leesville Loonies" were declared the Triangle's best high school football student section last Friday night during the Pride's home game against Wake Forest-Rolesville.
Since September, HighSchoolOT.com has accepted nominations from high school football fans across the area. A total of 22 schools were nominated, and by the end of October, the list was narrowed down to three finalists.
Fuquay-Varina's "Orange Crush" came in third place, while Wake Forest-Rolesville's "Cougar Crazies" finished in second place.
Leesville Road received more than double the nominations of the second place team, although the nominations were not the only thing taken into consideration.
HighSchoolOT.com, WRAL-TV, and 99.9 FM The Fan ESPN Radio attended games throughout the season, taking special note of the student sections in attendance. After attending Leesville Road's "Grill Team," where a few hundred students came out to tailgate prior to a game, it was decided that the Loonies were a tough crowd to beat.
At halftime of the Wake Forest-Rolesville game last Friday, HighSchoolOT.com's Nick Stevens and 99.9 FM The Fan ESPN Radio's Adam Harris, the co-host of "HighSchoolOT Gamenight" and the Saturday morning "HighSchoolOT" radio show, presented the Loonies with a banner declaring them the area's best.
Another "Student Section Showdown" will take place for basketball season, so if your school didn't win this time, make sure you have a big student section at basketball games. We'll be watching!
