Conference foes Leesville Road, Broughton match-up in first round

Nov 8, 2009

“We do this every year, so it’s nothing new," David Green said. "Three out of the last four years, we’ve played somebody out of our conference in the first round.”

Leesville Road finished the season with an 8-3 record. Broughton finished the season with a 5-6 record. However, Broughton finished the season No. 2 in the Cap 7 conference, and that means Broughton will host Leesville Road as the No. 6 seed in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-AA Eastern region.

“It’s the way the brackets fall. They beat the right people at the right time and finished second in the conference," Green said.

These two teams are no strangers to each other. Leesville Road hosted Broughton earlier this season on Oct. 2. The Pride beat the Caps 31-6, but Green said he would put too much stock into that game this time out.

“We’re going to be ready for this one. We can’t afford to overlook any one. How can you overlook somebody who finished higher than you did?" Green said. "That score didn’t reflect how close that game really was.”

The game was a defensive struggle in the first quarter with both teams going scoreless, but Broughton scored first in the second quarter when Jamal Kirton got into the end zone from one yard out.

Leesville Road got two touchdown passes from Josh Stanley later in the quarter to go up 14-6 at halftime. Stanley also picked up 67 yards on the ground for the Pride.

This season has been a wild one for Leesville Road as far as injuries go, and Stanley is one of the players that won't play this week.

“We may get some of them back, but we still don’t know. It’s kind of a wait and see for some of them," Green said. "We’re hoping Ryan Mangum will be back. That’s probably the one with the greatest chance of getting back in this week."

Leesville Road had several penalties Friday night against Wake Forest-Rolesville and they made some key mistakes, such as a muffed punt recovered by the Cougars and allowing a long kickoff return that set up a Wake Forest-Rolesville touchdown.

"We're going to have to play well [on Friday] and not make mistakes," said Green. "We can't make the mistakes we made Friday night and expect to make a playoff run, but I think we're getting back to being a good defensive team."

Green said he doesn't expect to see any surprises this week from Broughton, and he said not to expect any surprises from his team.

"I think we know each other pretty well. Not only have we played already this season, but we've seen game film several times playing against other conference opponents. There won't be any surprises for either one of us," he said.
