South Granville clinches Carolina 9 title

Oct 31, 2009

One week after beating previously undefeated Northwood, the South Granville Vikings clinched the Carolina 9 conference championship with a 16-14 win over Cedar Ridge.

Ian Bosley scored the first touchdown of the game for South Granville in the first quarter on a 15 yard run.

Cedar Ridge tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter, though, when Jake Geary, and East Carolina recruit, broke into the end zone from two yards out.

The tie didn't last long. Later in the quarter, South Granville's defense posted a safety, giving the Vikings a 9-7 advantage, then Josh Thorpe scored a 25-yard touchdown for South Granville, pushing the lead to 16-7.

South Granville didn't score again, though.

After both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, Cedar Ridge made things interesting in the fourth quarter with a three yard touchdown run by Brent Burnette.

The Red Wolves trailed 16-14, but time ran out on Cedar Ridge as South Granville got the win.

South Granville is now 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. With wins over Northwood and Cedar Ridge, South Granville would hold both tiebreakers should they be upset by Granville Central next week.
