Matt Frongello was the hero Friday night for Middle Creek as the Mustangs needed a 47 yard field goal as time expired to knock off Lee County in regulation, 38-35.
Middle Creek and Lee County played neck and neck all night.
The Mustangs scored first when Devonte Knox caught a 10 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Garrett Leatham.
Leatham had an outstanding performance against Lee County, completing 29-of-39 passes for 418 yards.
Omar Murriell responded for Lee in the first quarter with a two yard touchdown run.
The two teams went into the second quarter tied at 7.
Middle Creek got two back-to-back scores in the second quarter. The first touchdown came off a one yard run by senior Stephen Sladek, then Sladek caught an 11 yard pass from Leatham for the second touchdown of the quarter.
Lee County's Dequan Swann caught an 80 yard pass to cut Middle Creek's lead to 21-14 going into the half.
Lee County scored 14 points in the third quarter while Middle Creek's only points came from a 25 yard touchdown reception by Sladek from Leatham.
The Yellow Jackets took a seven point lead in the fourth quarter, but Sladek caught another touchdown pass from Leatham to tie the game at 35.
Frongello's kick to win the game came as time expired.
Middle Creek moves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Tri-Nine Conference. The Mustangs are in sole possession of first place in the conference, but they still have to play Panther Creek and Fuquay-Varina.
The Mustangs will host Cary next week.
Lee County falls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Jackets will have their bye week next week before traveling to Cary on Oct. 23.
