Fuquay-Varina shuts out Cary, 34-0

Sep 12, 2009

Early on it looked as if Cary may give Fuquay-Varina a game, and possibly provide the conference's first upset of the season. But by the third quarter, it was clear Fuquay-Varina was going to get another win.

The Bengals only scored 14-points in the first half, but scored another 20-points in the second half, to defeat the Imps, 34-0.

A team that is not known for it's passing game, Fuquay-Varina quarterback Nate Budde rolled out of the pocket on the first play from scrimmage looking to pass. The pass fell incomplete, and on second down the offense did something that looked more like themselves - they gave the ball to Cory Hunter.

The Cary defense looked ready for the running attack from the Bengals, though. Hunter was stopped on his first run after going just four-yards, and on the third down, Budde threw an interception to Cary's Gideon Akinsola on the Fuquay-Varina 32-yard-line.

Cary ran six plays on their ensuing drive, but only managed to advance the ball to the Bengal 23-yard-line before Deandre Henry fumbled the ball away to Fuquay-Varina.

The missed scoring opportunity was just one of two for the Imps on Friday night.

Fuquay-Varina got their first touchdown with 7:44 left in the second quarter when Budde broke a 19-yard touchdown run. Eric Powell's extra point gave Fuquay-Varina a 7-0 lead.

Budde finished the night with 119-yards on the ground.

Malcolm Thaxton scored again for the Bengals just two minutes later with a 38-yard run.

The Bengals led 14-0 at the half.

After having a slow first half, Hunter had a breakout second half. The junior scored two touchdowns in the second half – a 9-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Budde added a 46-yard touchdown run in the third quarter as Fuquay-Varina's defense shutout the Imps.

Fuquay-Varina will host Panther Creek next week in a key Tri-9 match-up. The Bengals are undefeated so far this season, boasting a 4-0 record, and they are looking for their fifth consecutive conference championship.

Cary falls to 2-2 on the season, and they will play Apex next week, a game that is a long-running rivalry.

I agree Cary was no match for FV. Cary is an improving football team, but they have a long way to go to be able to stop the running attack of a team like FV. I can't comment on how the other teams in the TRI 9 will do against FV's running attack since I haven't seen them play this year. I disagree with the comment "no need to pass to win". Yeah, they didn't need to pass against Cary, but when they come up against a defense that can stop the run, whether it be in conference play or in the playoffs, their lack of a passing game (0 for 2 against Cary) could hurt them. Good luck to FV. I'm pulling for them since it seems they are going to carry the TRI 9 banner.

Cary was no match for Fuquay phyically or mentally. The Bengals totally dominated the line of scrimage on both sides of the ball. Their wing T offense has been unstopable by conference members for the past 4 years so its likely no one in the conference this year will stop it either. They are head and shoulder above the rest of the Tri-nine. Why pass when you can just drive the ball down the throat of the defense and play ball control and control the clock. Fuquay has the best defense in the conference and a strong running attach that averages around 275 yards per game......no need to pass to win.

Without a doubt, FV was the better team last night. However, they are VERY one dimensional and better hope they don't come up against a defense that can stop the run. Their passing game is non-exisistent or at least it was last night, but then again Cary couldn't stop them so why not run all over em.
