17-year-old Cary golfer earns spot in U.S. Women's Open

Jun 12, 2009

Katherine Perry helped the Athens Drive girls win the state 4-A golf championship last fall.

On Thursday, she did something even more dramatic, winnng a local qualifier in Sanford to snag a spot in the U.S. Women’s Open.

The 64th Women’s Open will be July 6-12 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

Perry, 17, and a rising senior at Athens Drive, fired a 3-under par 70-71_141 to take medalist honors. She took one of six spots in the Open. At one point in her second round, Perry was five under par.

“I knew going in I had to shoot under par,” Perry said Friday.

Perry, who lives in Cary, said her Athens teammates were there pulling for her, wearing “Team Perry” T-shirts with “U.S. Open, here we come” on them.

The other five qualifiers include Kathleen Ekey of Sharon, Ohio; LPGA tour veteran Rosie Jones of Atlanta, 13-year-old Yueer-Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., and Ashleigh Albrecht of Murrieta, Calif.

Katherine is a member of Lochmere Golf Club, as am I, and I have had the priviledge of playing with her and watching her practice. She is a very sweet girl and, obviously an excellent young golfer. Last summer she won the Trusted Choice Big I Jr. Golf state tournament played at Pine Needles, which allowed her to play in the national event, where she placed in the 25. It's great to have such tallent come from Wake Co!
