ORLANDO, Fla. — It wouldn't be the first time a Triangle Pop Warner football team won the National Championship, but this year the area is sending three teams to the big game in Orlando, Florida.
The Capital City Steelers are sending two teams, while the Cary Chargers are sending one.
At the Pee-Wee Division-I level, the Cary Chargers Green team defeated the previously undefeated Winston-Salem Indians in the Mid-South Regional Championship this past weekend in Charlotte. The 15-7 victory means the team will advance to the Pop Warner National Championship next week.
The Division-II Junior Pee-Wee Capital City team defeated the Stanly Blue Devils, 25-20, last Saturday in Charlotte. The other Capital City Steelers team making the trip to Disney World is at the Midget Division-II level. The Steelers defeated the High Point Lions 8-7 last Saturday.
Both Capital City teams are undefeated this season.
Other area teams, all of which belong to the Consolidated Football Federation conference, were represented in the Mid-South Regional Championship last weekend, but they did not make it to the National Championship.
The Junior Midget Division-I Capital City Steelers were defeated by the Winston-Salem Indians, 8-0. At the Pee-Wee Division-II level, the Durham War Eagles fell to the Union Road Jaguars, 12-7.
The Wilders Grove Wolfpack Division-III Junior Midget squad also won last weekend, but Division-III playoffs do not go past the Regional Championship. The Wolfpack defeated the Wilmington 49er's, 12-6 in overtime.
Four cheerleading squads from the Triangle also made the cut for Disney World.
At the Pee-Wee level, the Sanford Sting and North Raleigh Bulldogs all qualified for the National Championships. The Garner Trojans qualified at the at the Junior Midget level, and the Bulldogs sent another squad at the Midget level.
Pop Warner will be streaming all cheerleading competitions live on the Internet for a small fee.
The Consolidated Football Federation is home to all of these organizations. The CFF consists of the following associations: Apex, Capital City, Cary, Cleveland, Durham, Garner, North Raleigh, Orange County, Sanford, South Johnston, Tri County, Wake Forest and Wilders Grove.
The teams play a nine game regular season, and qualifying teams have the opportunity to play in bowl games across the state and region, and some have the chance to advance to the Pop Warner playoffs.
Pop Warner is the largest and oldest youth football and cheerleading program in the United States. It was founded in 1929 in Pennsylvania, and it consists of teams in 42 states and multiple countries.
HighSchoolOT.com has communicated with all organizations traveling to Florida, and they have been given the opportunity to submit game summaries, photos, and video to HighSchoolOT.com next week. You will be able to find a special section on HighSchoolOT.com with coverage of the Pop Warner National Championships.
