Drew Pasteur reports errors for all four classifications in preliminary brackets

Nov 8, 2008

In an e-mail, Drew Pasteur, the founder of the Fantastic 50, told HighSchoolOT.com about a number of different issues with the 4-A and 3-A brackets.

"At the 4A/4AA level, I've seen a couple of problems. Ardrey-Kell has no non-conference loss to drop, so they are out at 4-6, 1-6. Instead, one of Terry Sanford, Knightdale, or Clayton should get in. This will push Richmond County back to the 4AA West, and may also (if Knightdale or Terry Sanford gets in) push Wake Forest down to the 4A East. This change will resolve the Richmond/Garner seeding mistake. Also, I believe that New Bern should be seeded over Smithfield-Selma in the 4AA East.

"The 3AA brackets are exactly the same as the ones I last posted, so no issues there. In the 3A East, I had a mistake, based on an incorrect White Oak vs. Jacksonville score; the NCHSAA brackets correctly show Jacksonville in (by an auto berth) & White Oak out. In the 3A West, West Rowan is 10-0, not 9-1, so they should be #1 or #2, not #4. Two other seeding questions I have relate to how teams that finish 3rd overall in a split conference, but second in their class, are seeded. I thought that such teams were seeded based on overall finish (so 3rd, if they finished 3rd). If this is the case, both Bertie and R-S Central should be seeded higher. Bertie would move up to #10 in the 3A East, and R-S Central to #9 or #10 in the 3A West. However, I may be mistaken about how seeding is handled for these teams."

On the new web site for the poll, Fantastic50.net, Pasteur reports additional problems with the 2-A and 1-A brackets.

"In the 2AA brackets, I have the same question about seeding for teams from split conferences that finish 2nd in their class and 3rd overall. The NCHSAA has consistently seeded such teams as at-larges in the 2008 brackets, so I think this is a misunderstanding on my part. If I were right, then South Brunswick (2AA East) and Lincolnton (2AA West) would be seeded higher, but the NCHSAA brackets are probably correct. The 2A brackets match mine exactly.

"In the 1AA East, Pamlico is listed at 6-4, but I had them 5-5; did they play 11 games? In the 1AA West, Bishop McGuiness has 4 conference losses, and should be 6-4; this drops them below Polk County. The discrepancy in West Wilkes' record and seed is my mistake; they were in a double-forfeit game I wasn't aware of. In the 1A East, I think Weldon is 9-1, not 8-2, so they should switch seeds with Plymouth, and be #4. Also, I made a seeding mistake with Jamesville; they finished 3rd in the Tideland, and are correctly seeded in the NCHSAA brackets. As in other classes, there are a couple of teams (Polk & West Columbus) seeded as at-larges who finished 3rd overall in their conferences, and 2nd in their class; this appears to be a misunderstanding on my part of the process for such cases."

The N.C. High School Athletic Association is working to correct all errors. Stay with HighSchoolOT.com for the latest information.
