Week 12: Tri-8 at a glance

Nov 6, 2008

Playoff spots are up for grabs as the final week of the regular season is among us. Cary looks to grab one of those slots as they travel to Fuquay-Varina. Athens Drives fights with winless Green Hope at home, Lee County hosts Apex, and the creeks are wild as Panther Creek visits Middle Creek.

Apex (7-3, 5-1) @ Lee County (2-8, 1-5)

Last week: Apex lost to Fuquay-Varina 28-21; Lee County def. Green Hope 21-19.

The Cougars travel down to Lee County to try and lock up a second place finish in the Tri-Eight and higher seed in the upcoming playoffs. Overall record does count as far as state seeding purposes go, and a team can drop one non-conference loss as well. With that in mind Apex would like to enter at 8-2 and possibly get a home game in the first round. But they will have to get past a spirited Yellow Jacket team that picked up their first conference win on the road last week and will be looking for two in a row. Running backs Cedric Gray and Darius Britton paced Lee County with a combined 201-yards on 36 rushes and two scores.

Green Hope (0-10, 0-6) @ Athens Drive (3-7, 3-3)

Last week: Green Hope lost to Lee County 21-19; Athens Drive lost to Middle Creek 25-20.

The Falcons visit the Jaguars with hopes just to salvage the season with a victory. Green Hope did manage some offense last week against Lee County led by quarterback Kameron Bryant’s 137-yards passing with two touchdowns along with running back Bryce Palmer’s 68-yards rushing. The Jags have a shot at making the post season. The Jags could still get an automatic bid by finishing third in the conference, they could go to playoffs by a draw in a three-way tie, or they could get an at-large bid with four wins qualifying them, but this season an at-large bid seems like a long shot.

Panther Creek (2-8, 2-4) @ Middle Creek (4-6, 3-3)

Last week: Panther Creek lost to Cary 10-7; Middle Creek def. Athens Drive 25-20.

The Mustangs earned a hard fought win last week against Athens Drive to stay in contention to move onward after this week, which they should if they get that fifth win. Middle Creek used big games from quarterback Garrett Leatham with 151-yards passing with two scores and running back Stephen Sladek pounding out 95-yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs are at home against a young Catamounts squad that is 1-4 on the road for the year and allows 36 points a contest during those games. Panther Creek would like to keep up their momentum gained this season with what would be a school record three wins.

Cary (4-6, 4-2) @ Fuquay-Varina (9-1, 6-0)

Last week: Cary def. Panther Creek 10-7; Fuquay-Varina def. Apex 28-21.

There’s a lot on the line for the Imps as they make the trek down to southern Wake County to take on the Bengals, who will attempt to be perfect in the Tri-Eight for 2008. Fuquay is simply playing for playoff seeding, for they already have the number one seed out of the conference after beating Apex last week. The Bengals now own the head-to-head tie-breaker over Apex, and they are looking to enter the 4-A bracket at 10-0 after dropping their sole non-conference loss.

Cary, on the other hand, needs to get big performances from their running backs Tommy Robinson, Ralph Chapman, and Bryan Wilson to pull off the upset. Cary is after the coveted third seed from the conference because it would result in an automatic ticket to the playoffs. However, if they lose and are tied for third at 4-3, it comes down to either breaking the tie by head-to-head competition (two-way tie), or by drawing names out of a hat (three-way tie).

The Imps do hold the head-to-head tie-breaker with Middle Creek, but do not against Athens Drive.
