Wakefield dismantles Sanderson, 34-14

Sep 27, 2008

Wakefield methodically picked apart Sanderson en route to a 34-14 dismantling Friday in the Cap 7 opener for both teams.

Wakefield quarterback Drew Wilkinson produced another stellar night, running for two touchdowns and passing for two more. Receivers Kevin Rojas, David Richardson and Nigel King combined for 188 yards and two scores.

“They didn’t have that many people in the box, so when the passing wasn’t there we could run it,” Wilkinson said. “When you have great athletes playing receiver, they can make plays.”

Sanderson took a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter off a seven-yard pass from Jeff Massey to find Curtis Boykins.

That would be the only wake up call the Wolverines needed.

As if they were practicing the two-minute drill, Wilkinson engineered a quick-strike drive where he had a 36-yard bomb to Rojas, a 15-yarder to Richardson, and he capped it all off with an 11-yard TD run up the middle.

After a defensive stop and a 37-yard punt return by Rojas set up the Wolverines at the Sanderson 28, Wilkinson found king in the back corner of the end zone for a 17-7 lead.

The Wakefield defense had their hands full in keeping a watchful eye on Massey, who came in with more 800 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, running back Travis Trumps. Trumps finished 131 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 17-14, but Massey was limited to a mere 50 yards.

“We had been struggling on defense the first five games of the season,” said Wakefield coach J.D. Dinwiddle. “We played a lot of young guys and they responded so well after we had a tough week of practice. As a team we finally put four quarters together and they did an awesome job.”

Linebacker K.J. Ward and defensive lineman Mitch Huegel were all over the field in leading the defense with six tackles apiece.

After Trumps’ touchdown, Wakefield again answered quickly. Starting from their own 20, Wilkinson hit King for a 38-yard gain, and two eight-yard plays later set the Wolverines up at the Sanderson 26. Wilkinson and King hooked up for another TD, this time from 26 yards out to give Wakefield a 24-14 cushion.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, with Wakefield ahead 27-14, Sanderson mounted a drive to the Wolverine 13-yard line, only to have another mishap break their backs.

Wakefield cornerback Chris McKinley made a sliding interception of a Massey pass to kill what looked to be a potential Spartan score and a one possession game.

It was all academic from there, as Wakefield would add another Wilkinson rush up the middle late to set the final margin.

“It was just them playing harder than we did,” said Sanderson head coach Jason Tindell. “At times, they were just kicking our teeth in. We took to many punches tonight, and we didn’t stand up, get our feet squared up and punch back.”

The road doesn’t get much easier for Wakefield, now 5-1 and 1-0, as they will host 6-0 Millbrook next week for a showdown in north Raleigh. Sanderson (4-2, 0-1) gets a week off to rest up for the same Millbrook team in two weeks.

Wakefield finally put together 4 solid quarters of football and played as a unit. The defensive line was incredable. Good job Wolverines!!!
