Millbrook holds off feisty Broughton to remain undefeated

Sep 27, 2008

Millbrook's unblemished record was on the line Friday night, and the undefeated Wildcats responded.

Broughton opened up the game with a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Millbrook got on the board in the second quarter, but Broughton added a field goal to push their lead to 13-7.

That was the halftime score in Raleigh.

The Wildcats fell behind 20-7 in the third quarter, but Millbrook rebounded quickly.

Malik Fair intercepted a pass from Broughton's Chandler Browning, and the interception turned into a pick-six. The extra-point brought Millbrook within six-points, 20-14.

Moments later, quarterback Brian Kass ran for a score to give Millbrook their first lead of the ballgame, 21-20.

Kuwon Eldridge would push the Wildcats ahead even further. In the final few minutes of the third quarter, Eldridge broke a 65-yard run for a touchdown, and Millbrook's lead was expanded to eight.

After the end of three quarters, Millbrook led Broughton 28-20.

At the very beginning of the fourth quarter, Eldridge broke another long touchdown run, extending Millbrook's lead to 15-points, 35-20.

Broughton had a fourth quarter flurry, scoring two touchdowns, but the final touchdown's two-point conversion attempt failed.

Millbrook won their homecoming game Friday night 35-33 in the conference opener.

The Wildcats advance to 6-0 on the season, including a 1-0 mark in the Cap Seven Conference. Broughton falls to 4-2 on the season.

I am a little late jumping in here but I was at the game and it was not that bad. I mean the officiating, Broughton is a good team and Millbrook played below their ability. I hope it was a good wake up call for Millbrook, they need it. I also think when you are up 35-20 maybe you should keep the ball on the ground instead of passing so much. Just my opinion, for what it is worth.

I hear what you are saying Nick and in my opinion the game was NOT fairly called. At this point it really doesn't matter though.

I'm not asking who had more penalties and/or more penalty yards. I'm asking if they were the right calls. If Millbrook committed more penalties, they should have more penalty yards. If Broughton committed more penalties, they should have more penalty yards. It is not the officials' job to make sure the penalty yards are even, just like in basketball it is not their job to make sure the fouls are even. As long as they are called consistently, it is the players' responsibility to adjust to how the game is being called. If they're calling block in the back closely, don't do it. If they're calling pass interference closely, don't make too much contact with the receiver - even if you're going for the ball.

There is a difference between calling a game unfairly, and one team having more penalty yards than the other.

Later today, we will have a quiz about rules. Take it honestly, without reading the material that goes with it, then go read the material associated with it.

I would have to watch the game again to be absolutely sure but to me, it seemed that the calls where VERY lopsided towards Millbrook. I have read rule books and consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the matter. In high school games you usually get a lot of offside, false starts, illegal procedure, etc. This game however, was dominated with the personal foul, block in the back, pass interference (which all three were questionable, including the one on Broughton). I am not trying to take anything away from Broughton but it is just my opinion that if the refs had kept their flags in their pockets a little more then Millbrook would have one much easier. These penalties where drive killers for millbrook in the first half. Broughton DID step up and stop Millbrook when they needed to but when a third and one is turned into a third and 10 or 15 it is much easier to stop.

Every game has refs that make bad calls. Life happens and you move on. Heck, when Millbrook's JV played Apex's, the officiating was horrible. Time passes. Sure, people will remember it was bad. It's just a game. Stop whining about it.

I have read all of these comments about how bad the officiating was... how it was just absolutely terrible... what was so unfair about it? Give me some examples.

I have found that most of the time when people complain about the officials, they do so because they really don't know the technicalities of the rules. There are a lot of differences between the NCAA & Pro rules, and the rules that high schools play by. If you haven't read a rule book, you probably don't know most of them.

We did a quiz last football season on WRAL.com about high school football rules. 32% of the questions were answered correctly. That should tell you a lot. And I know most of you are going to say "Oh, I know the rules..." I thought that too last season, then I started reading the actual rules, and you would be surprised at some of the differences.

So bring on the examples. What was so bad about the officiating?

And no, I don't have the penalty stats yet. I'm working on it.

I was there Friday night and it was a great game, pretty much decided at the end. Officiating was terrible. I said it before, I HATE when referees decide to be the center of attention. We are not (Fans) there to see them, let the kids play! With that out of the way, Millbrook was hurt by turnovers all night and they were lucky to escape with the W. Should be a great Conference season

Nick, did you ever get those stats. I would be surprised if it was even close. I can be as biased as the next fan but for catwoman to think that BHS was getting the shaft is downright hilarious.

I happen to know that bdstalli is not a fan of either team, in fact, he's not a fan of anyone in the conference or the county, so I'll take his word since he was at the game and I was not. I'm going to see if I can get the penalty stats from that game though.

catwoman1: You are obviously biased and so are the BHS parents, so I don't think asking them about the officiating would clarify anything. I had no problem with the officiating; you must have blocked out all of the calls against MHS. I would be willing to bet that if you looked at the stats MHS would have more penalty yards.
