It was a very rainy night Friday as Tropical Storm Hanna approached the state of North Carolina, but it didn't keep Broughton and Panther Creek from going at it in a non-conference match-up.
Both offenses had a very hard time getting into any kind of rhythm with the rain coming down, and after one quarter neither team had scored.
In the second quarter, an offsides penalty on Broughton gave Panther Creek a much needed first down. After a touchdown was called back due to an ineligible receiver, and Panther Creek eventually was forced to punt away.
The punt turned out to be the best thing that happened to Panther Creek during the game. Broughton faced 2nd down and 22-yards to go, and they were just two-feet shy of a safety.
On second down, Broughton quarterback Chandler Browning got the ball, faked a handoff, pump-faked, and took off running. He didn't get far, though. Browning slipped, lost his balanced and fell to his knees in the Broughton endzone, giving Panther Creek the two-points from the safety.
Those two-points would be the only points scored by Panther Creek.
After pinning Panther Creek deep in their own territory, the Caps' Emery Young took the ball on the ground for a 43-yard touchdown.
Sean Sheppard scored the only other touchdown for the offense on a 2-yard run in the third quarter.
The defense scored every single touchdown in the fourth quarter. Justin Burris returned an interception 35-yards for a touchdown, then returned another interception 52-yards for a score. Another interception was returned 37-yards for a touchdown.
Shelley also nailed a 45-yard field goal to put up an additional three-points.
Broughton advanced to 2-1 Friday night with a 38-2 win over the Catamounts, while Panther Creek fell to 0-3.
Panther Creek did have a final shot at a score with just minutes left in the game. After Shelley's field goal, sophomore Jonathan Douglas returned a deep Shelley kick off 19-yards, just past the Catamount 20-yard line. The Catamounts ran out of time, though.
Panther Creek will travel to Holly Springs in week four, and one of the two will get their first win of the season. If the Golden Hawks win, it will be their first varsity win ever. Panther Creek picked up their first ever varsity win last season against Holly Springs, but they have not put a game in the win column since.
Broughton will travel to Chapel Hill Friday.
