Prep football schedules changed, Football Friday canceled

Sep 4, 2008

Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to strengthen over the next few days, and with its potential impact on North Carolina at the end of the week, schools across the state have been forced to change their schedules.

Charlotte Independence was expected to travel to Madison County (FL) on Friday for an out-of-state game, but that game has been canceled.

A few schools are still holding games on Friday. For the complete list of games going on Friday, scroll down to the bottom of this story.

Wake County senior director of athletics Bobby Guthrie told HighSchoolOT.com Tuesday afternoon that Wake County schools would be given the option to change their games to alternative dates if they wanted.

"Wake County Schools will be monitoring [Hanna], and a determination of whether school and/or school activities will be canceled will be determined at that time," Guthrie said. "Prior to the school system doing something, schools may change their schedule if they wish."

This week's Football Friday with Tom Suiter has been canceled. You can watch Football Friday again next week after the 11:00 news on WRAL-TV.

99.9 FM The Fan's Dave Shore said that the Saturday morning radio show, High School OT, will go on as scheduled whether or not games are played Friday. You can listen to High School OT, hosted by Adam Harris, each Saturday morning from 8 am to 9 am.

If you have a game change to report, please call 1-888-472-9725 and leave a message. You can also contact Nick Stevens at stevens@ncsportsreport.com, and Tim Candon at tcandon@wral.com.

According to meteorologists, there are two additional tropical systems in the Atlantic that North Carolina will have to watch. Hurricane Ike formed on Monday and is intesifying, while Tropical Storm Josephine formed early Tuesday, but is expected to curve out to sea.

The track of Hanna has been moved to the eastern part of the state, and landfall is now expected to take place around 8 a.m. Saturday morning near Myrtle Beach, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center.

Stay with HighSchoolOT.com for the latest information about game changes due to Hanna, and stay tuned to WRAL.com and WRAL-TV for the latest weather information regarding Hanna.

I don't think football is more important than any other sport. The thing is football has limits as to how often they can play within a certain number of days, and they are also the biggest money maker. Without football, athletic programs will not have any other sports. The money comes from football.

I am very well aware of this as my daughters tennis match got cancelled on Thursday because the FOOTBALL team had to have the bus guess they are more important. Looks like a good case of DISCRIMINATION to me.
