Apex barely escapes Broughton

Aug 30, 2008

The Apex Cougars entered the season as the favorite to win the Tri-Eight Conference. The Broughton Capitals entered with the goal to return to the success of seasons in the past.

On Friday night, the two went head-to-head in Apex.

A sure All-Conference selection Kevin Fogg got Apex on the board first in the opening quarter with a 27-yard touchdown run, and with the Fogg run for the 2-points, Apex had the early 8-0 lead.

Broughton quickly responded with a 46-yard pass from Chandler Browning. Jeremy Shelley added the extra-point, but Broughton still trailed 8-7.

Brandon Carr wanted to make sure Apex didn't give up their lead. Carr caught a 33-yard pass from Houston Hawley in the second quarter, but the point-after was not successful. With the earlier two-point conversion, though, Apex still had a comfortable 7-point lead.

The Cougars wanted to extend it.

In the third quarter, Apex's Rob Fronk caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Fogg - that's right, Kevin Fogg - to extend Apex's lead to 21-7. Then, later in the quarter, Hawley put points on the board with a three-yard keeper.

Apex appeared to be pulling away from Broughton up 28-7, but the Caps weren't ready to call it quits.

Browning scored on his own three-yard keeper in the third quarter, and the completed a 60-yard pass in the fourth quarter to bring Broughton within one touchdown, 28-21.

Shelley was called on in the fourth quarter as well. The kicker nailed a 36-yard field goal to bring the score to 28-24.

The Caps simply ran out of time, though, and their comeback was cut short.

Apex held on to beat Broughton 28-24, advancing to 2-0.
