Winston-Salem football player suffers critical brain injury

Aug 23, 2008

A Winston-Salem Reynolds football player was injured in Friday night's game against Greensboro Page, and he is currently being kept alive on life support at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

Matt Gfeller, 15, was blocked by a Page player in the fourth quarter of the game Friday, and after 40-minutes he was taken to the hospital.

Reynolds principal Art Paschal told the Journal that Gfeller suffered a serious brain injury. Paschal was at the hospital for several hours overnight, and he said when he left around 5:30 Saturday morning Gfeller was breathing on his own.

Paschal told the newspaper that he had heard Gfeller had gotten worse after he left.

Gfeller would have started his sophomore year at Reynolds on Monday. His parents, Bob and Lisa Gfeller, are the presidents of the schools athletic booster club, and they have also been active members in the school's PTSA.
