Green Hope may have lost starting QB

Aug 17, 2008

Green Hope's presumptive starting quarterback Marcus Varsano re-injured a knee that kept him sidelined for much of last season.

The injury happened during a scrimmage Friday at Broughton High School in Raleigh. The information was confirmed Sunday evening by WRAL through Green Hope head coach Steve Katz.

Last season's injury required surgery.

Katz told WRAL that Varsano will be going to the doctor on Monday. "We hope for the best," Katz said in an e-mail to WRAL.

The severity of the injury is not yet known.

Varsano, who wears No. 7 for Green Hope, has served as the team's captain, and was a varsity starter last season. He has played quarterback and defensive back for the Falcons.

According to the Green Hope football Web site, Varsano was named to the Green Hope King Raptor Club this summer. To be named to the King Raptor Club, players must earn 430-points across five events in the team's Gridiron Challenge. Those events include bench max, squat max, broad jump, forty-yard dash, and agility.

In the Gridiron Challenge, Varsano reported a total score of 432.

When Varsano was injured last season, Green Hope had a number of options to resort to. On the varsity level, the Falcons had senior Bryant Derbyshire and junior Max Drisko. Derbyshire has graduated from Green Hope, and Drisko has transferred to Middle Creek.

Last season, Katz decided to bring up freshman Kameron Bryant from the junior varsity team. Bryant started in four varsity games last season, and he played in another two games. Bryant completed 25 of 52 passes for 363-yards.

Drisko led the Falcons in passing with 619-yards.

Green Hope will open their season at home on Aug. 22, with an endowment game against Wakefield.
