Garner, Millbrook to provide classic season opener

Aug 17, 2008

It's a game that Triangle high school football fans expect on the first Friday night of high school football season every year. The country boys vs. the city boys, Garner vs. Millbrook.

Last season, Garner went to Raleigh on opening week and took care of business, but the Wildcats had the chance for revenge in the playoffs, and a hot Millbrook team knocked off the favored Trojans in the second round.

Millbrook was a relatively young team in spots last season, but Garner was presumed to be on the Triangle's top teams with a lot of experience.

This year, the roles are reversed.

Millbrook returns a lot of talent on offense. The Wildcats lost just one player off of the offensive line, they return a very capable quarterback in Brian Kass, and they have very good talent in the backfield.

The Wildcats will have a running game and passing attack this season, and their offensive line should be ready early in 2008, unlike 2007. The line was the problem for Millbrook early on, and as they improved, the team improved. Kass will have time in the pocket to throw, and running backs will have holes to run through.

Eldridge rushed  for almost 1,500 yards last season, averaging 107-yards each time out. He was responsible for 18 rushing touchdowns. In the 2008 Shrine Bowl Combine, Eldridge recorded a 4.46 forty time.

Last season against Garner, Kass threw for 237-yards and three touchdowns as Millbrook routed the Trojans on their home field, 49-35.

The Trojans will have a new man under center this season, senior B.G. Howell. In preseason scrimmages, Howell looked small, but he's quick, accurate, and efficient. Garner has confidence in Howell at the quarterback position, and he should provide them with offensive power needed to be successful.

The Garner defense has looked impressive in the preseason as well. Against Broughton and Wake Forest-Rolesville, the Trojan defense has been able to impact their opponents' offense.

They'll need to do that again this year.

The Trojans had trouble stopping Millbrook in the playoffs last season, but Millbrook doesn't have Jamal Williams anymore. They do have Eldridge and Kass, though, both of which are more than capable of running the ball for long distances.

The wide receiver corps looked good in the Pigskin Kick-Off at Wake Forest-Rolesville as well. Led by senior Nick Murad, Millbrook should have a balanced offensive attack.

Millbrook and Garner kick-off at 7:00 p.m., Aug. 22, at Trojan Stadium. HighSchoolOT.com will be broadcasting live with 99.9 FM The Fan from the Game of the Week beginning at 3 p.m., so come out to tailgate, and join us for some high school football and sports talk.

I just want everybody to know something. As a grad of WFR of the class of 07 and a player on D i have to say this. Garner scored 3 times. But the first team D was NOT an i repeat NOT on the field. the coaches were puttin different players in. against the first team garner barely moved the ball. so stop sayin garner did good on WFR's D. they didnt.

Footballisawsome, you may now return to The Real World on MTV. Very interesting concept with the coaches: Questions: Coach Green: Who is the QB and what is the answer for such a horrid performance at center? Coach Smith(WFR): Is it possible that you will abandon the spread like O and get back to you ball control running game if the passing agme doesn't pan out? Coach Smith (Garner): SE is the team to beat, along with you in the Nuese... who else? Coach Inscore: Are you willing to start players on both sides of the ball to beef up your D? Coach Inscore: Bunn gave you fits at the scrimmage and the main reason was pressure in the backfield has the line changed? Same players... Hurt? Coach Inscore: Some recievers going accross the middle were affraid to get hit and therefore didn't make catches, I understand it is scarry to catch a ball in the middle, but that can be exploited by the opposition. Do you think it a problem and if so how do you rectify it?

Millbrooks D wasnt the greatest ever last year either but they still beat Garner. Maybe D wins championship but this is HS kids make mistakes more often. Millbrook will win with their D coming throught.

Dude, Humbay...

Freedom of speech? You actually don't have the freedom of speech on a private website. If WRAL wants to delete your comment they can. It's their website. It's not a government website. They can censor you as long as you're in their house.

That said, THEY HAVE GIVEN YOU THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH BY LETTING YOU POST ON THESE COMMENTS!! Everyone else here has the right to disagree with you and offer evidence as to why - in their opinion - you're wrong. In a matter of days this won't even be an issue.

"I picked Leesville Road over the Imps this season because it looks to me like their offensive line is a little bit underrated."

And my final comment...

"Leesville is a contender on the conference and state levels."

We're having all of the head coaches over to WRAL tomorrow to talk with them about our new coverage plans, and they are bringing with them a few players. I'm taking the interviews for the Cap Seven, so I'll be sure to ask about these issues. Anything else anyone would like asked about the Cap Seven? We will have lots of video each day this week from our coaches open house, so stay tuned.

Btw, humbay, when did I say Leesville wouldn't be a state championship contender last year? I believe we had the Football Friday Game of the Week at the Cary vs. Leesville Road game... And I quote from my preview:

"Leesville has a very balanced attack on offense. The Pride put up 185 rushing yards, and 189 passing yards. More impressively, the Pride only passed eight times and completed all but one of them."

More to come...

I can find it... create a link if you can? Coach Earl and I'm sure he would agree that his team did well! I would douht any coach would at this point. I am not a coach, so I have the luxury and I thought the freedom to peacefully and respectfully state my opinion?! No? I called it last year and you didn't agree about Leesville and I'm calling it again this year. Garner and Leesville are very similar and will do VERY well this year. Millbrook loses to Garner, because they do not have a defense and Garner will score and often. Garner also will be able to stop them more than once therefore shutting the door on an outscoring win, which will be Millbrook's life blood this as it was last! Garner scored on WFR a lot and uless WFR defense is not very good this year then I stand corrected. Leesville will work out the QB situation, blocking assignments and find a center. The only problem with running out of the spread is the middle and it you don't have a good center... well, touble!
