Joe McCullen got a surprise from Triton High School this off season.
The veteran head football coach was informed by the school that he would not be brought back to lead to the football team.
McCullen retired after the conclusion of last season with the plan of returning as a part time employee and head football coach, but the school decided not to bring him back.
In a phone call to WRAL on Tuesday, McCullen said he was disappointed in the decision, but hopes to be back coaching somewhere else soon.
Triton posted a 10-2 record last season and the Hawks bring back the vast majority of their talent. The NCPreps.com Preseason Coaches Poll puts Triton at No. 17 in the 3-A class.
A replacement for McCullen has not been announced.
