A freshman and a senior are tied for the top spot after Monday's opening round in the 27th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s golf championships at the Foxfire Golf and Country Club.
Freshman Brandon Katsoudas of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and senior Zane Lewis of Southern Lee had the day's only subpar rounds, each shooting two-under par 70. Asheboro's Daniel Brantley is third at even par 72, while Gastonia Forestview's Alex Taylor and Caleb Keck of Rockingham County are knotted at fourth at 73.
The championship is being held on a par-72, 6,591-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Forestview, which placed third in the team standings in last year's tournament, shot a 303 as a team and holds a narrow one-shot lead over Charlotte Catholic with Waxhaw Marvin Ridge in third, just two shots off the pace.
Defending team champion Burlington Williams is fourth at 310.
The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day event. Action will resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.
