Senior William Whitacre of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness fired a brilliant five-under par 67 to take a four-shot lead after Monday’s first day of the 15th annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s golf championships at the Keith Hills Country Club.
Whitacre has a four-shot advantage over teammate Stanhope Johnson, who had the only other sub-par round of the day and is in second place. Johnson was the 1-A medalist in the 2011 championships.
Keenan Denny of South Stokes is in third with a 73, six shots back, and five golfers are knotted at 74.
The championship is being contested on a par-72, 6,625-yard layout for the NCHSAA event.
Led by Whitacre and Johnson, Bishop McGuinness recorded an excellent team score of 289 to open up a 22-stroke lead over the field. Lake Norman Charter is second at 311 and then there is a three-way logjam for third place at 318 among Avery County, East Surry and Mooresville Pine Lake Preparatory. The best four of six individual scores count toward the team total.
Prior to 1986, all NCHSAA schools competed for a single title in an open tournament. Play went to three classifications in 1986 and then to four classes beginning with the 1998 tournaments.
A total of 84 golfers began play in the two-day tournament. Action is scheduled to resume at eight o’clock on Tuesday morning.
