Track titles up for grabs this weekend

May 10, 2012

Top athletes from across the state of North Carolina will compete in a busy weekend of track and field as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association begins its state championships in the sport.

The weekend of competition features 2-A championships for both men and women on Friday, and then on Saturday the 1-A championships will be held, all at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The 3-A and 4-A meets will be held next weekend.

Action in the field events will begin at 10 am and running events will start at 11 am. It will be the 92nd annual men’s championships and the 41st annual renewal of the women’s event.

Carrboro is the defending 2-A champion in women's competition while Berry Academy won the 2-A men's team title last year. In 1-A, Hendersonville won last year's women's title while North Rowan captured the men's crown. North Rowan has been a perennial power with nine state 2-A titles when it was in that classification from 1994 to 2007.

In 2-A regional action last week, defending state champ Carrboro won the Mideast women's title, with perennial power Burlington Cummings in second. Swansboro, Cuthbertson and Newton-Conover also won regional titles.

The regional team champions in men's competition included Wilson Beddingfield, Cummings, Forest Hills and Shelby.

Tevin Hester of Granville Central, named last week as the NCHSAA Male Athlete of the year for 2012, ran a 10.77 in the 100 meters in his regional to qualify for state competition, and Marcus McDowell of East Lincoln was a triple winner in regional action.

Isaiah Moore of Cummings recorded a 14.20 in the 110 high hurdles and also won the high jump in the Mideast competition.

Defending state 1-A men's titlist North Rowan also won its Midwest Regional over the weekend. Pamlico, North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham and Hendersonville also earned regional crowns.

In fact, two schools-- NCSSM and Hendersonville-- swept both men's and women's regional championships. Southwest Onslow and Monroe were the other top finishers in women's 1-A regional action. Monroe will certainly be a threat in the 1-A women's championships as Jamie Glenn and Reneazea Collins each won three events at the regional level.

Admission to the championship each day is six dollars.

The Greensboro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greensboro Sports Commission are serving as the host city sponsors for the event.

I loved coaching track and field in high school. We were in the 4-A level, and the competetion was strong back in the early 80's. I met Kathy McMillian once in Hoke County. The times and distances are so much better today for the most part. A few records of old still stand.
