Cary High School will have a new girls basketball coach next season.
Donald Kent stepped down as the head girls basketball coach of the Imps on Monday, according to Cary Athletic Director Mike Dunphy.
Kent is a teacher at East Wake High School and lives in Knightdale but has commuted to Cary in the afternoons to coach the girls basketball team.
"It was just tough on him and added to the stress level that you already have as a coach," Dunphy said. "He decided it was time to look for something a little bit closer to home."
This past season, the Imps recorded a 16-11 record last season, including a 10-6 mark in the Tri-9 4-A Conference. The Imps made a run to the third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A state playoffs where they lost to eventual state champion Millbrook, 62-19.
"He's a fantastic coach," Dunphy said of Kent, who has been coaching for over 25 years. "When it comes to X's and O's, he does a great job with the girls and he has been a great representative of Cary High School."
Dunphy said there is no time frame to hire a new coach.
"We want to get someone in who is on staff and that can be in the classroom here at Cary High School, but sometimes that takes some time," he said.
