Sanderson High School and the Sanderson Athletic Club will induct the second class of the Sanderson Athletics Hall of Fame in festivities to be held in September 2012. The class includes nine individual athletes, one family, a set of three brothers, and one team.

The Barber Brothers – Budhy (SHS Class of 1979), Bakty (SHS ’81), and Harry (SHS ‘82) were three ultra-talented soccer players who helped thrust the Spartans’ program into dominance in the late 70s and early 80s. Born in Indonesia, they came to the U.S.A. as youngsters and played with an elegance that separated them from their peers. All three were NCHSAA State Champions and All-State players and Bakty and Harry earned All-American honors. All three played together for the NC State Wolfpack.

Tresa Brown-Tomlinson – (Tresa Brown - SHS ’80) – led the Spartans women’s basketball team to successful campaigns in 1978-79 (19-4) and 1979-80 (28-1). The 1979-80 team lost in the semifinals of the NCHSAA State Tournament. “Tree” was a three time All-Metro Area Player of the Year, scoring 19.1 points per game as a senior. Upon graduation, she played for the UNC Tar Heels for four years, averaging 16.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She led the Tar Heels to their first ACC Championship in 1984 while being named ACC Player of the Year and MVP of the ACC Tournament. Her UNC jersey, number 24, hangs in Carmichael Arena.

William won two individual and two relay NCHSAA championships events. His first place time of 50.38 in the 100 butterfly in the 1988 NCHSAA Championship established a state record that stood for 17 years and is still the mark in the Sanderson record book. He excelled while competing in US Swimming, in college at LSU and UNC, and beyond. He was a member of the US Swimming National Team at the 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Lawson Family – Ken (Sr.) and Anne Lawson raised three sons – Ken Jr. (SHS ‘84), Miller (SHS ’89), and Michael (SHS ‘92) who attended Sanderson from 1981 through 1992. Mom and Dad were active members of the Sanderson Athletic Club. Ken (Sr.) held the position of president for three years. He was also a volunteer assistant football coach during four of the Chuck Lehning years. The boys all played football and baseball each and every season. Ken (Jr.) was Student Body Vice-President his senior year. Miller was Sanderson’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete his senior year and went on to earn four varsity letters in football and play in four bowl games at N.C. State. Michael played on the SHS baseball team that played in the NCHSAA finals in 1992. Sadly, Ken (Sr.) passed away in July of 2011.

Bill Lynch - (SHS ’77) – Ran Cross Country and Track & Field for three years each… finished in first place in the NCHSAA Cross Country Championship meet twice – as a junior in 1975 (winning time was 15:09) and as a senior in 1976 (14:52). They dominated the opposition – scoring 72 goals while giving up only 3 for the entire campaign! Rival Millbrook went 12-4-2 on the season with all 4 losses coming to the Spartans. Sanderson defeated North Forsyth in the state title game, 7-1. Ashley Riggs scored four goals and was named MVP of the state title game.
