Harnett Central's Spears ties state record

Harnett Central running back Jarrod Spears tied a state record against Western Harnett on Friday.

Against the cross-county rival, Spears broke a 95-yard kick return for a touchdown, his third of the season. That tied the state record for most kick returns for touchdowns, just three weeks into the season.

In week one, Spears broke two kickoff returns for touchdowns against Apex. That performance tied the state record for most in a single game.

Spears, who has offers from Cornell and Western Carolina, has plenty of time to set the record for most kick returns for touchdowns in a single season. He has already posted 270-yards off kick returns.

On offense, Spears has carried the ball 28 times for 287-yards and four touchdowns. He has also caught 12 passes for 201-yards and three scores. He is responsible 60-points already this season.

Harnett Central will play host to Overhills this week before opening up conference play at home against East Wake on Sept. 17.

bullcity- I think Nick is fairly busy, I'm sure he simply forgot. I would also add that when I looked at the record book this year I noticed that Thorpe's number were only through about half the season it appeared so it did not officially say he had the 5 that we are both saying he had. His name is listed for the Grimsley game but not for the 5. Not sure if that is playing into why he did not mention it. I say that because if you go back to the article I posted, someone comments that there was a guy many years ago that had something like 6 or 7. Nick responded by saying it wasn't in the record book so thus he wasn't reporting it.

I was going to say Nick and you seem to be ignoring TJ Thorpe's 5 KO returns. You wrote the article on this last year.

The state record for kick-off returns in a single season is held by TJ Thorpe over at Jordan. He had 5 kick-off returns for TDs last year. Including 2 against Greensboro Grimsley. If I'm not mistaken, highschoolot.com had an article about it. Actually here is the link to the article that you wrote earlier on Thorpe.
