Nassar Omar, Carrboro (2009 All-OT Team)

CHAPEL HILL — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced today the formation of the NCHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Council, working through the Student Services division of the NCHSAA.

The council will serve as a voice for student-athletes who participate in NCHSAA programs. The first Student Athlete Advisory Council will develop a mission statement and set goals and objectives under the guidance of NCHSAA staff.

The council will discuss topics that are relevant to high school student-athletes and develop ways to maintain a positive athletic experience. Prior to the council’s start date, members will undergo leadership training to help build a solid team. The SAAC will exemplify leadership and sportsmanlike conduct while carrying out the overall mission of the NCHSAA and the Student Services Division.

Membership on the Council is based on the following:
• A diverse group of rising juniors and seniors
• Meet all eligibility standards as outlined in the NCHSAA Handbook
• Participant/Member of at least one NCHSAA Student Services program (i.e. D.R.E.A.M. Team, Student-Athlete Summer Institute (SASI), Coach & Captain Retreat, etc.)
• Responsible individuals who possess leadership characteristics
• Positive role models
• Capable of working with students from a variety of social groups

The NCHSAA received applications for the council positions and then a special screening committee, including NCHSAA staff and Student Services program facilitators, made the selections.
Members of the NCHSAA Student Athlete Advisory Council are expected to attend the NFHS National Student Leadership Conference in July for training and team development. One member will be selected as the council chair, and he or she will be responsible for reporting at the NCHSAA winter and spring board meetings.
Members of the Council:

Region 1: Caroline Lowcher, Manteo High School

Region 2: Patrick Hernandez, Croatan High School, Newport

Region 3: Nassar Omar, Carrboro High School

Region 4: Jazmine Kemp, East Bladen High School

Region 5: Bobby Gordon, III, Southern Alamance High School

Region 6: Norkeithus Otis, Ashbrook High School, Gastonia

Region 7: Julia Roberts, Watauga High School

Region 8: Mary Catherine Webb, McDowell High School

Mark Dreibelbis, NCHSAA assistant executive director who coordinates the Student Services Division, said, "The creation of the SAAC will provide the opportunity for direct and meaningful student interaction and input, while increasing the scope and influence of our Student Services Division. We are excited to have such an outstanding inaugural council to represent our ideals of character, respect, integrity and citizenship for all the student-athletes involved in NCHSAA activities."

Chiquana Dancy, Student Services assistant, will be working directly with the council. She noted, "The NCHSAA is an organization that continually strives for excellence. We are considered by many a leader among high school associations in the country, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council is a step in the right direction to uphold those standards."
