The NCAA will reconsider a proposal that would require players to enroll in college within a year of high school graduation to avoid losing years of eligibility.
The NCAA said Thursday it had received enough requests from its members to reconsider the rule. Some schools believe the rule could unfairly hurt foreign athletes who graduate at 16 or 17 or athletes who are training for the Olympics or other international competition.
The rule would also loosen restrictions for players who compete on teams with teammates who receive money beyond necessary expenses.
The legislation, passed in January, effectively renders prospects who participate on a team with a professional athlete as professionals - even if the prospects don't receive anything beyond necessary expenses.
The rule will be reconsidered in April.
