Currituck forfeits to Gibbons, then changes mind

Nov 9, 2009

Ravenscroft vs. Cardinal Gibbons

Currituck High School contacted the N.C. High School Athletic Association on Saturday after the preliminary brackets came out, expressing their wishes to opt out of the 3-A football playoffs.

Early Monday afternoon, the NCHSAA received word from the school that they were going to forfeit their first round match-up against Cardinal Gibbons. In response, the NCHSAA sent out a press release to members of the media detailing the forfeit.

However, less than one hour later, the NCHSAA was contacted again by Currituck, this time to change it's mind on the forfeit.

"We have just received word at about 1:15 p.m. that Currituck has rescinded its earlier decision after another meeting with players and school personnel, and plans to travel to Raleigh to play Cardinal Gibbons in the first round," the NCHSAA said in a release.

"[The association] waited until it had been confirmed to send out the original story about the forfeit, and we no sooner sent it out that the school called back after changing its mind."

Had Currituck gone through with the forfeit, they would have faced a minimum fine of $1,000.

Currituck is 1-10 on the season after it had to forfeit a regular season win. Last week, Currituck lost to First Flight 83-42, and they will have to make the drive to Raleigh of more than three hours and nearly 200 miles on Friday.

Friday's first round game will be the first ever home playoff game for Cardinal Gibbons since joining the NCHSAA.3

The only worse than the NCHSAA football playoff system is the BCS. There is no reason why a team with a losing record should be in the playoffs. The NCHSAA is greedy and self serving. Making teams play an 11th game under the guise of an "endowment game"? Then 8 state championships? The season is too long and undeserving teams get in, and why?? MONEY. In this case, Currituck has to spend tax payer dollars to drive 200 miles (while putting kids at risk), taking kids out of class early, then have to drive back late. Give me a break.

Why does a one (or two) win team make the playoffs? In fact, why did my Garner Trojans at 6-5 make it? Of course, the answer is, as usual, the root of all evil aka "money".

Currituck plays in a "split" conference - one that has a mix of 2A and 3A teams. In split conferences, the top two teams from each class get automatic playoff berths. There are only two 3A teams in Currituck's conference, so both are guaranteed a playoff berth, even if they go winless.

Perhaps they don't want to drive several hours (and pay for buses) just to get crushed, after winning only one regular-season game. I don't blame them, but I suspect that the NCHSAA will sanction Currituck with a heavy fine.
