The N.C. High School Athletic Association has released the 2009 Average Daily Membership numbers for football seeding purposes.

The numbers are available on HighSchoolOT.com at this link.

The ADM numbers are used to determine which schools will go into which playoff subdivision for their respective class.

Once the 64 qualifying teams are determined for each of the four classifications (1-A, 2-A, 3-A and 4-A), the NCHSAA divides them in half based on their ADM numbers. The largest 32 schools go to the AA, the smallest go to the A.

For example, Wakefield High School is the second largest school in the state with an ADM of 2,797. That would mean Wakefield has a 100-percent chance of being in the 4-AA playoffs.

Harnett Central on the other hand has an ADM of 1,414. That is the sixth smallest ADM number in the 4-A classification, so the Trojans have a 100-percent chance of being in the 4-A playoffs.

Nick Stevens will have much more on the ADM numbers in his "Bubble Watch" on Monday.

Looking at these numbers kind of throws the whole 3A isn't as competitive as 4A concept out the window. Many "experts" kept saying HC's move up to 4A would be difficult and then this year HC's playing the three in county rivals (Triton, WH, Overhills) that are all 3A was an indication of a weak schedule. In all likelihood HC had 4A numbers for the last few years they were 3A. Now they are 4A but easily the smallest 4A in the area. Their three in county rivals are very large 3A teams. In fact Overhills now has more students than many 4A schools and Triton is the eighth largest 3A school with barely more than a classroom's difference from some of the 4A schools. The smallest of those three 3A schools, Western Harnett is the school that lost to HC by only ten, 23-13. In short 3A, 4A it doesn't really matter. It's about what players you put on the field and how well the coaching staff has them prepared to play the game.

RC numbers are not accurate, RC just opened an early college high school. If those students are included RC numbers will jump to over 2,200 plus...

Don't get too excited about these as yet. Some of the numbers are not correct, Richmond for example. It happens every year.

The realignment was done on last year's numbers, not this year's. It will be re-evaluated in 2013, and that's when we'll likely go to a 5-A class, so big changes will be on tap then.

The school is locked into its classification for 4 years. This is the first year of the current realignment. So even though HC's enrollment is less than some of the 3A schools, those schools will be 3A and HC 4A for this and the next 3 seasons.
