NCHSAA does not have ADM numbers from DPI yet

The N.C. High School Athletic Association uses Average Daily Membership (ADM) numbers to determine which schools will go to the small and large subdivisions in the football playoffs. This year, however, the ADM numbers may come in late.

Individual school systems report their ADM numbers for each of their schools to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Once DPI gets the numbers together the NCHSAA obtains them and makes some changes.

In order for the ADM numbers to be used for football playoffs, the NCHSAA must add parochial schools, like Cardinal Gibbons, as well as federal schools, such as Cherokee. These schools do not report ADM numbers to DPI.

NCHSAA associate executive director Rick Strunk told HighSchoolOT.com Wednesday that they do not have the ADM numbers from DPI yet.

"As of Monday there were at least 11 school systems, not schools, they (DPI) were lacking," Strunk said. He added that the staff at the NCHSAA is working to find out when they will get the numbers.

"At this point there is not a specific estimated time of arrival that we’ll get them," said Strunk.

There is no reason to believe that the ADM numbers will not be out in time for the brackets to be created next week on Saturday, Nov. 7.

"We have a couple of potential options but we are confident we’ll get stuff from DPI eventually, although it never is quite as timely as we might hope," Strunk said.

The first round of the playoffs is scheduled to begin Nov. 13.

Good question. Some schools are broken up into academies, and the numbers aren't reported for the larger school as a whole - which is what is used for the football seeding. They also have to add the parochial schools to the list, as well as the federal schools. I've been told there are some schools that have more than just grades 9-12 in them as well. Those would have to be adjusted too.

What changes do they make to the DPI numbers? Isn't that sort of stuff pretty much cut and dry?
