WakeMed Health & Hospitals has established a Concussion Clinic to ensure young athletes receive proper care for concussion injuries. In 2008 over 1,000 Wake County patients under the age of 17 were diagnosed at emergency departments with a concussion or closed head injury, according to the Thompson Emergency Department Database.
The Concussion Clinic is comprised of a group of occupational and physical therapists and speech language pathologists trained to make neurocognitve and functional assessments on pediatric concussion patients. The team will also provide educational outreach for young athletes, parents, coaches and athletic trainers.
Dr. John Wooten, pediatric neurologist with Raleigh neurology Associates and medical director of the WakeMed Concussion Clinic said without proper diagnoses and treatment, concussions can lead to “long-term consequences, risk of coma or even death.”
The Concussion Clinic is open Tuesday 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (appointments 5-7 p.m.) and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 pm (appointments 8:30 a.m. - 11a.m.). The clinic is at the therapy treatment space in the Health Park on the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, and appointments can be made at 919-350-4340.
