CARY — Green Hope and Garner went head-to-head in a 7-on-7 at Green Hope High School Tuesday morning. I was there to take in the action, and spoke briefly to both head coaches afterward.

Garner head coach Nelson Smith said they still have a long way to go, but they're where he thought they would be at the end of June.

The Trojans look pretty athletic, and I thought their defense did pretty good, except for a few missed assignments here and there. The offense is still a work in progress, though.

Garner will have to replace quarterback B.G. Howell who graduated earlier this month from the school. With two quarterbacks sharing time under center Tuesday, it looks like the Trojans will have some options at the position. Both quarterbacks need to work on timing with their receivers, though.

"We're getting there, we just have more work that we need to do," Smith said.

Green Hope head coach Steve Katz was happy with his team's performance on Tuesday, especially in the second half of the 7-on-7.

Katz said his team has been working very hard during the summer, and that they are seeing some improvement.

The Falcons looked pretty good on offense, but the defense is what impressed me. Green Hope pretty much shut down Garner's offense in the second half, and I counted three interceptions in the same time period.

"We just need to do what we can do and things will work out for us," said Katz.
